Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

Fire does $85,000 in damages to home

A fire damaged a home on Old Bristol Road Friday morning. A person in the area saw the smoke rising from the eaves of the house and called 911 at 8:35 a.m. Boone Fire Department, with assistance from the Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department, responded and had the fire under control within 15 minutes. Council green-lights traffic tips

Boone drivers can expect more pedestrian crosswalks and lowered speed limits, after the Boone Town Council approved several recommendations from the town’s transportation committee.

One-stop voting nears 15,000
Watauga County’s election numbers are still on track for a record turnout, as early one-stop voting begins to wind down. As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, a total of 14,515 ballots had been cast in the county, either through the one-stop voting sites or mail-in absentee ballots.

Farm-City sprouts Nov. 6
The annual Farm-City Banquet is bringing the best of town and country together again on Nov. 6. It’s the 53rd year of the event and this year’s theme is “Bringing Us Together,” emphasizing the positive roles of the urban, rural and university communities working together to preserve and sustain Watauga County’s environment.

Siblings arrested in sexual assault case
Two Boone teens have been arrested and charged with sexual offenses.

Watauga sheriff’s reports:
Oct. 14 —Burglary with forced entry, larceny and criminal damage to property were reported at a home on the 400 block of Slabtown Road in Zionville. The victim reported a person entered the home, damaged a window air conditioning unit, and removed bottles of wine and various jewelry.

Charrettes: 22 years and counting for Boone
It’s the end of one planning phase, but 22 years of work lies ahead for Boone planners.

Winter weather ties record low temperature
Unseasonably cold weather tied the record for the daily low temperature Oct. 29 at the official U.S. Weather Service reporting station located next to the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain.

No injuries in 421 collision

There were no injuries in a collision Tuesday morning on U.S. 421.

Planning charrettes end for Boone
As a lesser known saying goes, “All good charrettes must come to an end.” The town of Boone closed the workshop portion of its design charrette last Friday, and the Lawrence Group consulting firm is now summarizing its findings for a final presentation Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Getting a taste of ham — radio
The Watauga County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Office and Watauga Amateur Radio Club are teaming up to offer an amateur, or ham, radio class in November.

Watauga District Court reports:
Sept. 26 —Albert Wade Adams, 25, of 986 Shawneehaw Ave., Banner Elk, was charged with a probation violation. His sentence of 48 hours in jail was activated.

Fifth District U.S. Virginia Foxx has a commanding lead in finances heading into the stretch run of the General Election period.

A local family of radio stations built on its flagship AM station, WATA, may soon become part of the state’s largest radio broadcasting group.

Wilkes man killed by falling tree limb

A Wilkes County man died Thursday after being struck by a fallen tree limb.

Officials urge flu shots for coming season
Health officials are urging people to roll up their sleeves and prepare for winter, but they are also touting a nasal precaution to fight the flu.

Watauga sheriff’s reports:
Oct. 10 —Damage to real property was reported in an open field area on the 1900 block of Green Hill Road in Blowing Rock. The victim reported the land was damaged by trespassers using a vehicle to spin up the ground.
