Trip to East Carolina highlights 2009 slate

Appalachian State will not have to board an airplane to play an FBS opponent in 2009.

Pioneers rip Patriots, Myers Park up next
After handling Freedom two times this season, Watauga should have had no problem beating the Patriots again, especially in the second round of the state 4-A playoffs.

Wallace’s return lifts Pioneers
It would be easy to understand if Jake Wallace wanted to call it a season. But Wallace would not have his senior year end because of an injury — even a serious one.

Watauga edges Wilkes Central
With a postseason berth secured, Watauga’s boys’ soccer team starts the state 4-A playoffs next week. Instead of being idle for an entire week, the Pioneers scheduled two games against solid opponents this week to get ready.

WHS tennis falls
Watauga’s girls’ tennis season ended Tuesday with a 5-2 loss to Providence in the second round of the state 4-A team tennis tournament at the Carroll Complex.

Appalachian announces 2009 football schedule

Six home games, including the home opener versus a traditional NCAA Division I FCS power, and the renewal of an in-state rivalry after a 30-year hiatus highlight Appalachian State University's 2009 football schedule, which was announced by director of athletics Charlie Cobb on Tuesday afternoon.

Area soccer: Under-18 team hosts play-in game
The High Country Avalanche under-18 girls’ soccer team is playing the Winston-Salem Twins Wednesday night in a play-in match to determine who will reach the Presidents Cup state tournament.

STATESBORO, Ga. — In a game loaded with big plays and big decisions, Appalachian State needed plenty of both to beat Georgia Southern 37-36 Saturday.
