Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

ASU grabs win after eight lead changes

Appalachian State’s thrilling 37-36 victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles had no less than eight lead changes. Even when the lead didn’t change hands, the finish kept the 20,851 fans at Paulson Stadium on their feet as players from both teams kept making big play after big play.

East Burke dashes Watauga's homecoming hopes

East Burke held Watauga to seven yards in total offense in the first half and rolled to a 45-13 win over the Pioneers Friday night at Jack Groce Stadium.

Main will retire from ARHS board post

Appalachian Regional Healthcare System board of trustees member Council Main will not seek another term, an ARHS press release stated Friday.

Candidates speak out
General Assembly candidates shared their views and platforms as the early, one-stop voting period opened in a prelude to Election Day on Nov. 4. The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a candidate’s forum Tuesday night, an event held at the Watauga County Courthouse in Boone.

Plotting Boone’s course
The town of Boone looked to the future Wednesday evening, as citizens and officials began to develop a growth strategy leading into 2030.

Watauga sheriff’s reports:
Oct. 4 — Melissa Borrack Borkowski, 27, of 267 Grandfather Farms, Banner Elk, was served with a warrant for arrest on a charge of communicating threats.

Watauga District Court reports:
Sept. 25 —A charge of felony larceny was dismissed against Matthew Charles Minton, 19, of 299 Eats Flat Church Road, Lenoir.

Blowing Rock board approves multi-use plan
Eight months after requesting a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) from the town of Blowing Rock, Chetola Severn Partners were finally granted permission from the town’s board of commissioners Tuesday night to begin a multi-use project known as Blowing Rock Commons.

WHS parade Friday afternoon

Watauga High School is taking its 2008 homecoming “Around the World.” On Friday, Oct. 17, at 2:30 p.m., the WHS Student Council will host the annual Watauga High School homecoming parade. With its “Around the World” theme, the parade will feature Diane Drum as grand marshal, as participants march through downtown Boone, escorted by the Boone Police Department and special guests The trip ends back at the high school, with the Pioneer football team facing East Burke at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call Watauga High School at (828) 264-3133 and ask for Leigh Wallace or Dylan Russell.

Minor injuries in Wednesday morning accident
There were minor injuries reports in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on N.C. 194. Kimberly Elane Transeau, 19, of Merdian Falls, was traveling southbound on the 1300 block of N.C. 194 at 9:40 a.m. in a 2006 Kia Sorento. Transeau told investigating officer Sgt. B. Adams of the N.C. Highway Patrol that two vehicles stopped in the lane in front of her and she was unable to stop. Transeau ran off the right side of the road to avoid collision. The Sorento struck a terminal for BellSouth telephone service; however, a representative from BellSouth and businesses in the area did not report a disruption in service. Transeau was transported to the Watauga Medical Center by Watauga Medics. As of 1 p.m., she remained in the emergency room in stable condition. She was wearing a seat belt. Election officials respond to vote bumping
State elections officials defended themselves against a report in The New York Times that suggested North Carolina was among nine states illegally bumping voters from the rolls.

ASU lecture: TVA chief talks energy policy
Tom Kilgore, president of the Tennessee Valley Authority, spoke Wednesday at Appalachian State University regarding his perception of energy production and consumption in the U.S. and our future relationship with energy.

Deep Gap home damaged by blaze
Fire damaged a home located at 369 Arnold Watson Road in Deep Gap last Wednesday.

Boone Police reports:
Oct. 1 — Breaking and entering and larceny were reported at 9:54 a.m. on the 600 block of Stadium Drive. Prescription medication was reported stolen.

Watauga sheriff’s reports:
Oct. 2 — Bobby Dean Sullivan, 38, of 582 Gerd Branch, Lansing, was served with a warrant for arrest on a charge of simple assault. He is scheduled to appear in district court on Nov. 3 in lieu of an unsecured $1,000 bond.

Watauga District Court reports:
Sept. 25 —An order for arrest was issued for Bryce Christopher Adrian, 22, of 3006 Broomsedge Way, Durham, for failure to appear on charges of driving while license revoked and improper turn.

Local gas prices fail to keep pace with decrease
High gasoline prices don’t begin with a trickle at the gas pump — they have their origins in Houston.

Main course was water at Lunch and Learn
Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson made a pitch for the town’s new water-intake plant as the days count down to an important referendum vote on Nov. 4.

Ginn working on debt problem
The Ginn Company has reduced its staff at Laurelmor and is still working to resolve credit issues after missing payments on a $675 million debt.

Watauga District Court reports:
Sept. 24 —Christopher Shawn O’Connor, 48, of 142 Summer Drive, Boone, pleaded guilty to driving while license revoked after impaired revocation notice. A prayer for judgment continued was granted.

Candidates flock to Democratic fall rally
The Watauga County Democratic Party held a fall rally Saturday at Watauga High School, expressing optimism for the coming election. Several hundred people gathered to hear from candidates and organize for the early, one-stop voting that begins Friday.
