Virginia Delp Brown
Mrs. Virginia Delp Brown, 80, of Crumpler, N.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone, N.C.
She was born Oct. 3, 1927 in Alleghany County, N.C., to the late Fields Stephen Delp and Ethel York Delp.
Mrs. Brown worked for 15 years at Penry Manufacturing Co. in Mouth of Wilson, Va. She was a member of Chestnut Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Crumpler, N.C.
Survivors include her husband, Spencer Brown; one daughter, Kathy Roark and husband, Meredith, of Deep Gap, N.C.; two sons, Larry Brown and wife, Joan, of Crumpler, N.C., and Roger Brown and wife, Brenda, of West Jefferson, N.C.; one sister, Laura Crouse of Elkton, Md.; four grandchildren, Patti Halsey, Katina Wilcox, Brady Brown, and Angie Roark; one step-grandson, Devin Phipps; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Randal Greene and the Rev. David Fox. Burial will follow in the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, prior to the funeral service, at Ashelawn.

Milo Greeno
Mr. Milo "Red" Greeno, 84, of 3566 Hardin Road, Boone, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 23, 2008, at his home.
He was born June 19, 1924 in Granville, Pa., a son of the late George and Bessie Arnold Greeno.
Mr. Greeno was a retired field manager for G.T.E. Telephone, and also served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Stevenson Greeno; one step-son, Kenneth E. Lisk and wife, Mariette, of Boone; one step-grandson, Ean Lisk of Boone; one daughter, Pansy Rodgers of Charleston, S.C.; two granddaughters, Denise and Joanie; and one grandson, Bruce. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jane Greeno; one sister, Sarah Benjamin; and two brothers, George and Leslie Greeno.
Services will be conducted Saturday morning, Sept. 27, 2008, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Bud Russell. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Mrs. Ruby Naomi Richards Jones, 83, of Chestnut Grove Road, Boone, died Thursday morning, Sept. 18, 2008, at Glenbridge Health Care and Rehabilitation. 
She was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late General Lee and Bessie Pearl Lawrence Richards.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Chester H. Jones; one daughter, Nell Fletcher and husband, Max, of Boone; two sons, Ned Jones and wife, Judy, of Boone and Robert Jones and wife, Linda, of Fleetwood; four grandchildren, Kim Jones of Mount Holly, Kristina Jones Norris and husband, Scott, of Boone, Mark Jones and wife, Angel, and Timmy Jones and wife, Carol, all of West Jefferson; five great-grandchildren, Hannah Grace Norris, Emily, Allie, Eva and Kristen Jones; two sisters, Bernice Grice of Concord, and Suma Jones of Boone; and two brothers, Stanford Richards of Lynchburg, Va. and Kenneth Richards of Deep Gap.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Cheek; and three brothers, Russell Richards, Ralph Lawrence “R. L.” Richards, Johnny Richards; and two infant brothers, James Odell Richards and Bobby Lynn Richards.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Meat Camp Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. David Clippard and the Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Sylvia Lombardi
Mrs. Sylvia Lombardi, 82, of Newland, N.C., died Sept. 23, 2008.
She was born Nov. 30, 1925 in Bronx, New York. She was the youngest of ten siblings of Italian immigrants Domenico and Filomena DeBenedictis. Following her graduation from high school she married her childhood sweetheart Mario R. Lombardi, Sr., who preceded her in death in May 2007.
Mrs. Lombardi was an avid tennis player for over 40 years and for over 15 years taught many others the love of this game at the Land Harbor Tennis Association in Newland, N.C. She was an accomplished seamstress, artist, and quilter. She was an avid reader and passionate about the beauty and wonder of the North Carolina mountains. She retired to Ormond Beach, Fla. in 1969 and moved to Newland, N.C. in 1991.
A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Lombardi is survived by a brother, Richard DeBenedictis of Long Island, N.Y.; her daughters, Leslie Morganti and Stephanie Lombardi of New Port Richey, Fla.; and her son, Mario R. Lombardi, Jr. of Snellville, Ga.; their spouses, Ralph Morganti and Laurie Lombardi. She has six grandchildren, Danielle Katz, Paul Morganti, Lisa and Christopher Lombardi, and Kristina and Ellice Hodges; four great-grandchildren, Virginia and Nicholas Morganti, Alexander and Vincent Katz. Her friends and family recognized her as a wonderful human being and she will always be a beautiful memory to all who knew her.
The memorial service will be on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Land Harbor Recreation Building, 22 Land Harbor Plaza, Newland, N.C. 28657, followed by refreshments at the Lombardi residence, 26 Grossbeak Road, Land Harbors, Newland, N.C.

Ruby Shull Michael
Mrs. Ruby Shull Michael, 93, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 15, 2008.
She lived in Vero Beach, Fla., for the past six years. She spent the majority of her life in Watauga County. Mrs. Michael held a college degree and a Master’s Degree from Appalachian State University. She taught school for 30 years in Watauga County and Caldwell County.
Mrs. Michael was a member of Three Forks Baptist Church for many years. She loved and followed the teachings of her Lord Jesus Christ and she was indeed a servant and inspiration to all who knew her. A willing minister of God has gone home to be with her Savior.
Survivors include a son, Charles B. Michael and wife, Marcia, of Vero Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Gwyn M. Costner of Chimney Rock, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Lee Edmisten and husband, Ed, of Sebastian, Fla., Nancy Danner of Sylva, N.C., and Della Critcher and husband, Jim, of Boone, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jennifer M. Rickell and husband, Mark, of Nashville, Tenn., and Charles B. Michael, Jr. and wife, Amy, of Burlingame, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Kannon and Kendall Rickell, Charles B. Michael III, and Loren Emerick.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Harry Michael; an infant daughter; her mother and father, Robert B. and Lena Shull; brothers, Robert B. Shull, Jr. and Rufus A. Shull.
The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
A remembrance and celebration of her life will be held at Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone, N.C., at 11 a.m. on Oct. 4, 2008.

James Malcolm Miller
Mr. James Malcolm Miller, 75, of 112 Walls Road, Vilas, died Monday evening, Sept. 22, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born May 21, 1933 in Watauga County, a son of the late George and Bessie Neely Miller.
Mr. Miller was a truck driver and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Bettye Walls Miller; one daughter, Beth Eastridge and husband, Richard, of Warrensville; five sisters, Nancy Brown of Norfolk, Va.; Lovely Danner of Boone; Leona Maready and husband, Leonard, of Chinquapin; Betty Chapman and husband, Melvin, and Nell Porter and husband, Clint, all of St. Augustine, Fla.; three brothers, Thomas Miller and wife, Anna Mae, and Hansford Miller and wife, Edna, all of Boone; and Richard Miller and wife, Quinn, of Buford, Ga.; three brothers-in-law, Cecil Walls and wife, Reva, of Lynchburg, Va., Alfred Walls and wife, Charlotte, and Richard Walls and wife, Pat, all of Vilas; four sisters-in-law, Martha Miller and husband, Boyd, of Lenoir, Helen Hicks and husband Jim, and Linda Walls, all of Vilas; and Shirley Crouch of Lynchburg, Va. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Clay and Ruth Walls; and seven brothers-in-law, Irby Brown, Cameron Danner, Max Walls, Bobby Walls, Edgar Reece, and Graham Triplett; and one nephew; and two nieces.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Steve Leashomb and the Rev. Burl Greer. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Henry Clay Moody
Mr. Henry Clay Moody, 77, of 4076 Beaver Dam Road, Vilas, died Monday evening, Sept. 22, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 20, 1931 in Watauga County, a son of the late Stacy and Sarah Norris Moody.
Mr. Moody was a retired farmer and a member and deacon of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. He was also a guitar player in a bluegrass gospel band for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Stout Moody; one daughter, Virginia Harmon and husband, Clyde, of Lenoir; two sons, Dennis Moody and Darrell Moody and wife, Amy, all of Vilas; two granddaughters, Stacie Barber and husband, Brandon, of Charleston, S.C., and Jamie Roark and husband, Michael, of Vilas; two grandsons, Jason Harmon and wife, Carmen, of Lenoir, and Mavrick Moody of Vilas; one great-granddaughter, Molly Roark of Vilas; one great-grandson, Jacob Harmon of Lenoir; two sisters, Margaret Eggers of Vilas, and Helen May and husband, Dean, of Taylorsville; and one brother, B.F. "Pete" Moody and wife, Annie, of Lenoir. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Bess Wilson; and one brother, Ralph Moody.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Carl Johnson and the Rev. Quincy Norris. Burial followed in the Upper Beaver Dam Cemetery.

Doris Florence Niemeyer
Mrs. Doris Florence Niemeyer, passed away Sept. 24, 2008.
She was born May 22, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mrs. Niemeyer graduated from UCLA in 1952. She was the proud matriarch of a large family and was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence E. Niemeyer.
She is survived by her loving family of one sister, Marie Boynton; her four children, Steve Niemeyer, David Niemeyer, Grace Hinson and Gail Core; her 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff of Mayview for the special love they showed to their mother.
The family looks forward to being reunited with her and their father in the Lord’s Kingdom which is soon to come.
Services will be held Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, N.C. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Mount Lawn Memorial Gardens, Boone N.C., at 1:00 p.m.

Smith Adam Harmon
Mr. Smith Adam Harmon, 83, of Old US Highway 421, Zionville, and Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone, died Monday morning, Sept. 22, 2008 at the Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 1, 1924, in Watauga County, the son of Monroe Andy and Virgie Mae Stacey Harmon.
Mr. Harmon was a member of Vilas Valley Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Singer Furniture in Lenoir.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Victoria Ward Harmon; his five children, Randy Harmon and wife, Ruth, of Vilas, Linda Farthing and husband, Dewey, of Banner Elk, Ronnie Harmon and wife, Sarah, of Leicester, Karen Adams and husband, Bill, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ricky Harmon and wife, Tanya, of Lancaster, S.C.; ten grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Harmon of Vilas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Leslie Harmon; and three brothers, Stacy, Bill and Norman Harmon.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Vilas Valley Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dan Church and the Rev. Bill Warren. The body will lie in state at the church from noon until 1 o’clock. Private graveside services will be in the Danner Cemetery.

Mr. Fred E. Hollar, 86, of Kernersville, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 7, 1922, a son of the late Mack Andrew Hollar and Jennie Trivette Hollar.
Mr. Hollar was a retired farmer and truck driver and a member of Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone. He was deeply loved by family and friends.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Hollar (Joan) of Colfax; two daughters, Sharon Yokeley of Winston-Salem, and Phyllis Nelson (Jim); and son-in-law, Gerald Fletcher, all of Pfafftown; grandchildren, Jerry M. Hollar, Alan Fletcher, Dawn Webster, Jill Fletcher, Josh Nelson, Chris Yokeley, and Robin Johnson; ten great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Payne Hollar; one daughter, Peggy Fletcher; one granddaughter, Katie Nelson; two sisters, Polly Bumgarner and Hazel Helton; and three brothers, Hight, Lige, and Ray Hollar.

Eileen McMahon Littwin
Eileen McMahon Littwin, 86, of Addolorata Villa, Wheeling, Ill., died Sept. 14, 2008.
She was born July 17, 1922, in Chicago, and she was known as “Winged Grace” for her agility on the basketball court at Immaculata High School, Eileen was a graduate of Chicago Teachers College and a substitute teacher for many Catholic elementary schools in the area. She was beloved for her bright smile, her positive attitude, her quick sense of humor, her singing and piano playing and for her gift for turning common moments into special occasions.
Surviving are one daughter, Kathleen Simon and husband, Steve, of Boone; five sons, John Littwin and wife, Barbara, of Chicago, Ill.; James Littwin and wife, Carol Mayer, of Barrington, Ill.; Robert Littwin and wife, Peggy, of Bartlett, Ill.; Timothy Littwin and wife, Gail, of San Antonio, Tex., and Joseph Littwin and wife, Pamela, of Palatine, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, Patty Whitaker and husband, Brad; Joe Simon and wife, Amy; Danielle and Julie Littwin, Kristen Gile and husband, Nick; Michael Littwin, Lisa Anticevich and husband, Clint; David Littwin, Tim Litwin, Tracie Hernandez and husband, Chris; Kimberly and Kara Littwin; two great-grandchildren, Dean and Mallory Simon; one brother, Dr. John McMahon and wife, Grace; two sisters, Estelle Schaefer and husband, Don, and Ann Metzger and husband, Gene; and by two sisters-in-law, Mary and Helen McMahon.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John L. Littwin; and by three brothers, Robert McMahon, James McMahon and the Rev. Thomas McMahon, C.S.V.; and by a sister-in-law, Dorothea McMahon.
A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at St. James Church, Arlington Heights and burial followed in the All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Ill. The family received friends at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home from 3 until 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19.

Geneva Ward Presnell
Mrs. Geneva Ward Presnell, 67, of Liberty Lane, Taylorsville, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Watauga County, August 26, 1941, the daughter of the late Edward and Girtie McGuire Ward.
Mrs. Presnell was retired from Paul Robert Chair in Taylorsville and a member of Hickory Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Gwen Foster of Taylorsville and Melissa Moretz of Hickory; two sons, Doug and Michael Presnell of Taylorsville; a sister, Minnie Hand of Granite Falls; and a brother, Ralph Ward of Hickory; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Presnell.
Services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Hickory Seventh Day Adventist Church. Pastor Marc A. Swearingen officiated. Burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.

Mrs. Genevieve Canter Eller, 60, of 108 Clyde Winebarger Road, Boone, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at her home.
She was born Jan. 13, 1948, in Watauga County, a daughter of Martha Belle Canter Moretz and the late Wade D. Canter.
Mrs. Eller was a homemaker and attended Blue Ridge Mountain Church in Elk Park.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Eller is survived by one son, Bobby Eller and wife, Gail, of Todd; one granddaughter, Miss Amisha Eller of Todd; six sisters, Jean Dollar and husband, David, of Boone, Reba Curtis and husband, Bob, of Morganton, Phyllis Trivette and husband, Grayson, of Boone, Lucille Honeycutt and husband, Eugene, of Todd, Laura Norris and husband, Jerry, of Boone, and Sharon McCurry and husband, Odell, of Sugar Grove; and four brothers, R.D. Mallie Culler Kallam
Mrs. Mallie Culler Kallam, 84, of Pinnacle, widow of the late Charles William Kallam, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was born in Stokes County on August 19, 1924, to the late Sidney and Minnie Welch Culler.
Mrs. Kallam was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She worked and retired after 21 years from Hunter Publishing Company and was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eddie and Beverly Kallam of King and Phillip Kallam of the home; two granddaughters and spouses, Cindy and Kend Shelton of Boone, Denise and David Joyce of Kernersville; one great-grandchild, Marlie Shelton of Boone; and one sister, Lucille Wagoner of King.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with her granddaughter, the Rev. Cindy Shelton, conducting the service.

LeRoy Penley
Mr. LeRoy Penley, 67, of Dobson, and a native and former resident of the Rich Mountain community, died Friday morning, Sept. 19, 2008, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. 
He was born Dec. 2, 1940 in Watauga County, to William Paul and Arbazennia Belle Bryan Penley.
Mr. Penley was of the Christian faith. He was formerly employed as a dye technician at Armtex in Mt. Airy. He served his basic training for the U.S. Army in Fort Jackson, S.C.
Survivors include five brothers, William Frank Penley of Morganton, William Paul Penley, Jr. of White Plains, Billy Penley of Mt. Airy and Daniel Penley and Harold Penley, both of Boone; seven sisters, Eva Key of Pisgah Forest, Faye Allen of Stacy, Edna McNeir of Davidson, Mich., Shirley Hutchens of East Bend, Geraldine Gibbons of Shallotte, Sue Billings of Mayodan, and Lillie Williams of Union Grove. A number of nieces, nephews, cousins and honorable mention, Wayne Bullin, LeRoy’s best friend, also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Parson; and one brother, Burl Penley.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Rich Mountain Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Bobby Billings and the Rev. James Hagaman. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Culler Cemetery.
Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Culler Cemetery Fund, in care of Rich Mountain Baptist Church.

Arlie Wilcox
Mr. Arlie Wilcox, 84, of Lenoir, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 17, 1924 in Watauga County, to the late Bill Wilcox and Florence Johnson Dula Wilcox.
Mr. Wilcox was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Bush Cars and Used Parts Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Story Wilcox; his daughter, Tammy W. Greene and husband, Ryan, of Lenoir; his sister, Mrs. Jim (Mollie) Drum of Sawmills; a special niece; Tommie Gail Saunders and husband, Teddy; a special nephew, Bobby Simmons of Lenoir Healthcare; and numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and thoughtful, loving friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Tommy (Annie Lee Wilcox) Griffin; five half-brothers, Thomas H. Dula, infant Jones Dula, Clyde Dula, Lennie Wilcox and Kermit Wilcox; and four half-sisters, Dolly W. Simmons, Hettie W. Trivette, Rose W. Winkler and Bessie W. Ashley.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at Pendry’s Chapel at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Vines, the Rev. Edd Warren, the Rev. Chuck Bristle and the Rev. Johnny Phillips officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
