JMU overcomes ASU in final push

Pioneers, turnovers tame Ashe Huskies 27-6

In the Pioneers’ 27-6 victory over Ashe County at Jack Groce Stadium Friday, Baine Martin added two more touchdowns to his season totals by returning an interception 36 yards for one score, and by breaking free for a 60-yard run for another.

Pioneer booters edge Freedom on the road

The Watauga boys’ soccer team held on in the closing minutes of its match against the resilient Freedom Patriots Thursday night to take a 1-0 win at the Catawba River Soccer Complex.

WHS volleyball squad downs McDowell

Much like it did two days earlier to fellow Northwestern 4-A Conference rival Freedom, Watauga’s volleyball team never gave McDowell any glimmer of hope of winning Thursday night.

Commentary: Crowd won’t intimidate Appalachian

I had to chuckle a little when a writer on the weekly SoCon conference call asked Appalachian State head coach Jerry Moore if the Mountaineers might be a little taken aback by the crowd that is expected at Bridgeforth Stadium Stadium this Saturday.

A.C. Reynolds blanks Pioneers
It seemed the best way for A.C. Reynolds to combat Watauga’s high-scoring offense was to keep the ball away from the Pioneers.

Pioneers host border rival Ashe County
When Watauga hosts Ashe County Friday night at Jack Groce Stadium, Ashe will be without its starting quarterback Daniel Waln.

LENOIR — Watauga’s cross country teams dominated the Northwestern 4-A Conference relays held in Lenoir Wednesday.


Pioneers bash Patriots 3-0
It was quick, quiet and decisive. Watauga’s volleyball team had no trouble beating the Freedom Patriots 3-0 Tuesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym. The Pioneers rolled to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-10 Northwestern 4-A Conference victory. Watauga (11-2, 4-1 NWC) hosts McDowell in another NWC showdown Thursday.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Appalachian State jumped out to a two-set lead Tuesday night before East Tennessee State came roaring back to take a 3-2 win over the Mountaineers, 29-31, 16-25, 25-14, 26-24 and 15-10.

ASHEVILLE — A.C. Reynolds pulled into a tie with Watauga in the overall girls’ golf standings following the latest Northwestern 4-A Conference Golf tournament held Monday.

Pioneers erase 15-point deficit, claim win over Hounds

MOUNT AIRY — Watauga, which trailed North Surry for most of Friday’s showdown, rallied for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtook the Greyhounds 26-22 in a shocking finish to a game that North Surry had under control — until the final 12 minutes.

MOUNT AIRY — Most who watched Watauga rally to take a 26-22 victory from North Surry Friday night will remember how quarterback Devan Corum rallied the Pioneers for three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

ASU wins Winthrop Classic
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Sean Dreybus scored just two minutes into overtime off an assist from Arie Muniz to give Appalachian a 2-1 win over Winthrop in the Winthrop Classic Sunday afternoon.
