Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

In the Pioneers’ 27-6 victory over Ashe County at Jack Groce Stadium Friday, Baine Martin added two more touchdowns to his season totals by returning an interception 36 yards for one score, and by breaking free for a 60-yard run for another.

Adopt-A-Dog Month

Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson snuggles with Lilo, a 4-year-old Chihuahua, moments after she signed a proclamation which urges Boone citizens to be aware of companion animals, such as dogs. The proclamation also praised the services of the Watauga Humane Society and pronounced October as American Humane Society's Adopt-A-Dog Month.

One of Boone’s sweetest festivals is returning for its 28th year.The Southern Appalachian Historical Association’s (SAHA) Apple Festival is coming Oct. 11, and according to special events coordinator Freda Greene, organizers are excited to the core.

Watauga County Crimestoppers requests the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible for the following crime(s):

Sometime early last week on Monday or Tuesday, Sept. 8 or 9, at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.), a home was broken into on Maggies Lane, Boone. Maggies Lane is located off North Pine Run Road. A white 1986 Ford pickup with N.C. tag No. XYC2255 was taken, along with some long guns, yard equipment and an air-conditioning unit unit. On Saturday, Sept. 13, sometime between 8 and 8:30 p.m., an unknown suspect broke into a white Nissan Pathfinder parked on the side of Guy Ford Road near the bridge in the Sugar Grove community. Anyone with information on these crimes, or any other crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 828-268-6959. All information will be kept confidential. Crimestoppers pays rewards for information which leads to arrests; recovery of stolen property; seizure of drugs; and the location of wanted persons.

Shooting victim identified

The identity of the man shot on Sept. 6 has been released by the Watauga County Sheriff's Office. James Canter, 32, of Zionville, was found at his residence with apparent gunshot wounds when officers responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired. The incident report from the sherifff's office indicates the injuries were the result of a domestic disturbance. Canter was airlifted via WINGS Air Rescue to Johnson City Area Medical Center in Tennessee. As of Tuesday afternoon, Canter remains in JCAMC listed in fair condition. Sheriff Len Hagaman said the incident remains under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time. By Melanie Davis, staff writer

Gas price hike sparks state investigation
A continued gas shortage of gasoline is creating record prices in some areas of North Carolina, though availability has led to “spot shortages” that have cause gas prices to vary by as much as $1 per gallon among stations within a mile of one another.

Boone Police reports:
Aug. 25 —Seven incidents of criminal damage to property by vandalism were reported at 11:22 a.m. on the 2000 block of Blowing Rock Road.

School calendar issue addressed
The Watauga School System calendar committee began work Aug. 25 on a school calendar for the 2009-10 school year.

Hiker injured at Glen Burney Falls
A hiker was seriously injured after a fall at Glen Burney Falls in Blowing Rock Sunday afternoon. The man, whose identity has not been released, fell approximately 40 feet, with an estimated 20-foot free fall onto the rocks at the base of waterfall. Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue and Watauga Medics were called to the scene in the early afternoon. The hiker suffered head injuries and arm and leg fractures. He was airlifted to Johnson City Area Medical Center in Tennessee via WINGS Air Rescue. His condition is unknown. The waterfall is located off of Glen Burney Trail, near Annie Cannon Memorial Park. Howard Street to be closed Thursday
Howard Street in Boone will be closed Thursday morning, Sept. 19, at the northwest corner of Raley Hall adjacent to Appalachian Street to remove the existing emergency generator in preparation for replacement with a new generator. Several of the parallel parking spaces may be affected. Another closure will be necessary to install the new generator prior to fall break. This closure will be announced once there is a confirmed delivery date.

Ike spikes pump prices
An expected shortage of gasoline led to long lines at the pump, empty storage tanks and rising prices in the High Country beginning Friday.

Look up the meaning of ‘success’
Three local Rotary Clubs, along with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Boone, are participating in the nation-wide Dictionary Project for the second year in a row. The project is a part of a national non-profit agency that is attempting to give every third grade student in the country a dictionary with the help of local sponsors.

Six-figure grant targets childhood-obesity fight

The Appalachian District Health Department has landed a $475,000 state grant to help reduce childhood obesity in the region.
