Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

Lost hiker found thanks to GPS

After searching for nearly three hours, rescue workers found a lost hiker near the Blue Ridge Parkway Thursday night thanks to a cell-phone signal.


A United message

Members of the board of directors of the High Country United Way, along with representatives from the agencies the group funds, met Thursday in Boone for the kickoff of the annual campaign. The local United Way chapter, which serves Watauga and Avery counties, plans to raise $625,000 and focus on raising awareness about the local organizations it supports. America held its breath when Hurricane Gustav threatened the coast of Louisiana this week in anticipation of what injuries he would bring with his 111-mph winds.

Democrats open HQ on Labor Day
The Watauga County Democratic Party got to work on Labor Day, officially opening its new campaign headquarters in downtown Boone.

Volunteers needed to help clean up local waterways
Organizers of this year’s Big Sweep are looking for volunteers to help clean up rivers, creeks, streams, lakes and other waterways across the state. Locally, the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service and National Committee for the New River are organizing clean-ups.

Blowing Rock FD hosts open house Sunday
The Blowing Fire Department will be hosting a public open house at its new station on U.S. 321 Sunday.

Blowing Rock civil suit is over; jury finds town free of negligence

The civil trial against the town of Blowing Rock is over after two weeks of evidence presentation. The lawsuit was filed by Robert Cobb, father of a 12-year-old girl who fell at Glen Burney Falls in August 2004.

The race is on in VC 7-miler
Racers, strap on your shoelaces. One of the High Country’s most celebrated running events, the Valle Crucis 7-Miler, kicks off Friday. The race, which starts at Valle Crucis Elementary School and winds uphill to Dewitt Barnett Road, is the middle leg of an annual Triple Crown series.

Watauga sheriff’s reports:
August 18 —Damage to property was reported at the Watauga County Skate Park on Complex Drive. A person cut the fence surrounding the park.

Break-in at The Bistro

The Bistro restaurant in New Market Centre fell victim to breaking and entering and theft Sunday night or in the early morning hours of Monday.

Temporary homes needed for animals

Watauga County Friends for Life, the Humane Society and Animal Care and Control are making an urgent plea to residents to assist with renovations of the Animal Control facility from Sept. 5 to 15 by fostering animals currently residing in the building.

Bob Dole pays area a visit

Former U.S. senator and Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole visited Blowing Rock Thursday, doing a little old-fashioned "Main Street" campaigning for his wife, N.C. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.

Bogus electronics sales reported to sheriff’s office
The Watauga County Sheriff's Office has issued a report of suspected bogus electronics sales in the area.

Funds established for accident victim

Accounts at three banks have been established by the friends and family to benefit the Caldwell wife and mother found five days after an auto wreck.
