Caroline Roseborough Bare

Mrs. Caroline Roseborough Bare, 70, of Ravenwing Lane, Blowing Rock, passed away Monday morning at home after a three year struggle with Bone Marrow Lymphoma.
She was born Nov. 28, 1937, in Hamlet, N.C., a daughter of the late William G. Roseborough, Jr. and Minnie Mims Roseborough.
Mrs. Bare moved to Watauga County in 1968 and was an antiques dealer, having owned and operated Caroline’s Collectibles for a number of years.
Caroline was an avid animal lover, and was active in the Watauga County Humane Society, where she served on the original Board of Directors.
She was also a supporter of Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary.
Surviving are her husband, Bart Bare; one son, Blaine Bare and wife, Erin Scott, of Elizabeth City, N.C.; one brother, William G. Roseborough, III and wife, Emma, of Hamlet, N.C.; two nieces, Debbie Lorris and Heather Marlowe, both of Charleston, S.C.; and one nephew, Glenn Roseborough of Candler, N.C.
She was predeceased by a nephew, Larry Robert Roseborough, a Vietnam veteran.
Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel.
Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Holshouser. A Wake will follow at the Bare residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Watauga County Humane Society, 200 Casey Lane, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to the Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary, 210 Grassy Gap Creek Road, Beech Mountain, N.C. 28604.

Charles Clarence Braswell
Mr. Charles Clarence Braswell, 82, of Cary, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Cary Wake Med Hospital.
He was born May 31, 1926, in Raleigh, N.C., to the late Clarence Odell Braswell and Levie Ann Murdock.
Mr. Braswell was a 1942 graduate of Durham High School and a 1945 graduate of Duke University.
He retired from North Carolina State University as Director of the Physical Plant in 1988 and. previously was Physical Plant Director at Appalachian State University.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 60 years, Julia Hamilton Braswell; four daughters, Linda Brown and husband, David, of Wrightsville Beach and Blowing Rock; Bonnie Trivette and husband, Danny, of Cary; Marcia St. Clair and husband, David, of Emory, Va., Martha Wolfenbarger and husband, Billy, of Sanford; brother, J. Swanson Braswell and wife, Hannah, of Durham; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted Friday, August 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, N.C.
Burial will immediately follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.

‘Junior’ William Dewey Harris
Mr. “Junior” William Dewey Harris, 61, of 106 O'Henry Lane, Butler, Tenn., died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was a native of Carter County and was the son of the late Dewey Martin and Eleanor Hartley Harris.
Mr. Harris was a member of the Church of Christ and attended Stout Hill Church of Christ. He was a retired logger.
Survivors include two sons, William “Bart” Harris and Jason Harris and wife, Tiara, of Butler; two step-sons, David Reid and wife Jeannie, of Lenoir, N.C., and Christopher Reid of Butler; two step-daughters, Amy Parlier and husband, Harold, of Elk Park, N.C., Elizabeth “Betsy” Reid of Butler. He is also survived by one brother, Henry Harris and wife, Cathy, of Butler; and two sisters, Willa Jean McKenzie and Annabelle Church, both of Foscoe, N.C. In addition, Mr. Harris is survived by 12 grandchildren, Dakota Guy, Tyler Blevins, Megan Reid, Hannah Reid, Harley Harris, Phoenix Lovell, Timothy Barr, Brittney Reid, Dustin Reid, Adam Parlier, Tracy Parlier and Tammie Parlier Clark. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a special friend of many years, Paul Potter of Butler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Reid; one son, Dewey Martin "Marty" Harris; and one sister, Nadine Richardson.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2008, at the Stout Hill Church of Christ with Mr. David Irick, minister, officiating. Interment will follow in the Cable Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday, August 28, at the Stout Hill Church of Christ and at the residence at other times.

Billy Lee Robbins
Mr. Billy Lee Robbins, 66, of Lenoir, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, in Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
He was born Oct. 2, 1941 in Watauga County, a son of the late William Ross and Maude Edith Jordan Robbins; and the husband of Vera “Sis” Dollars Robbins of the home.
Mr. Robbins attended Welcome Home Baptist Church. He had worked for Singer Furniture for 21 years and Broyhill Furniture for 10 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Connie Sue Robbins of Morganton; his son, Randy Dale Robbins and wife, Tammy, of Granite Falls; four sisters, Barbara Ann Miller of Rhodhiss; Betty Jane Day and husband, Jim, of Martinez, Ga.; Becky June Hodges and husband, Jimmy, of Dallas, N.C.; Margaret Harmon of Lenoir; and four brothers, William Ross “Dub” Robbins, Jr. and wife, Ada, of Lenoir; Tommy Dean Robbins and wife, Janice, of Deep Gap; Roy Robbins and wife, Linda, of Charlotte; and Larry Robbins of Lenoir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Benny Joe Robbins and Roger Dale Robbins.
A celebration of Mr. Robbins’ life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2008 in the chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Aldene Wheeler officiating. Burial will be held 3:00 p.m., Friday, in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11, one hour prior to the service, on Friday, August 29, 2008 at Evans Funeral Service.

Verna Lillian Woodie Wilcox
Mrs. Verna Lillian Woodie Wilcox, 102, of Bourne Lane, Asheville, passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 26, 2008, at the Western North Carolina Baptist Retirement Home in Asheville.
She was born Jan. 21, 1906 in Vannoy, (Wilkes County), N.C., one of nine children. She and her husband, Herman, married in 1926 and lived in Johnson City, Tenn. They moved to Boone in the 1930’s, where Verna assisted her husband who was manager of the ET&WNC Railway Station (the train known as “Tweetsie” which operated between Johnson City and Boone), Western Union delivery, REA Express, and the Trailways/Greyhound Bus Terminal. In 1952, Verna and Herman’s son, Glenn, opened Wilcox Travel Agency, Inc., in offices next to the Bus Terminal in Boone. Wilcox Travel is now based in Asheville, and is one of the largest privately-owned travel agencies in the United States.
A deeply committed Christian, Verna was very active in many church and civic activities, including membership at First Baptist Church of Boone, Women’s Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist Convention, Cradle Roll at First Baptist Church Boone (Director for many years), Gideons Auxiliary Bible ministries (Boone and Asheville), the Worthwhile Women’s Club of Boone, and the Rhododendron Garden Club of Boone. For many years, she was also a Gray Lady hospital volunteer with the American Red Cross, and was particularly dedicated to visiting shut-ins. Upon moving to Asheville in the late 1970’s, Herman and Verna attended Biltmore Baptist Church. She was currently a resident of Biltmore Forest in Asheville, N.C., and the Western North Carolina Baptist Retirement Home/Rickman Nursing Center in Asheville.
Mrs. Wilcox loved to play music by ear, especially hymns, on the piano and electric organ, and enjoyed growing a large variety of flowers in her garden. She also made beautiful flower arrangements and won many awards. She loved homemaking and was especially loving and dedicated to her family.
Survivors include her son, Glenn W. Wilcox, Sr. and wife, Pauline Greene Wilcox, of Asheville; five grandchildren, Sharon Wilcox Moulds and husband, William, of Minneapolis, Minn., Glenn Wallace Wilcox, Jr. and wife, Annette, of Asheville, Marie Wilcox Woodson and husband, Robert, of Weaverville, and David N. Wilcox and wife, Pam ,of Asheville; ten great-grandchildren, Will Garrison, Diana Woodson Reece and husband, Travis; Glenn Wilcox, III, Tyler Wilcox, Corey Wilcox, Joshua Wilcox, Ashley Wilcox, Marisa Woodson, Elizabeth Wilcox, and Rebecca Wilcox; and one great-great-grandchild, Kate-Marie Reece. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Herman Wallace Wilcox; her father and mother, William Vance Woodie and Delphia Miller Woodie; seven brothers and one sister.
Services will be conducted Saturday morning, August 30, 2008, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be David Wilcox. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Biltmore Baptist Church, 35 Clayton Road, Arden, N.C. 28704, or to the First Baptist Church, 375 West King Street, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Kimberly Lynn Parker Li
Ms. Kimberly Lynn Parker Li, 47, of 118 Coventry Lane, Boone, died Wednesday evening, August 20, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born July 25, 1961 in Grant County, Ind., a daughter of Gerald and Mary Richardson Parker.
Ms. Li graduated from Watauga High School in 1979 and Nyack College in Nyack, N.Y. in 1983. She also received a graduate degree from Appalachian State University in Reading. Following graduation, she worked in Thailand, the Philippines, and China. Ms. Li was a missionary and an administrative assistant at Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone.
Kim shared a desire to go to an East Asian country in the early 1980s. She waited for several years, ministering in Thailand and the Philippines. When the doors finally opened, she was one of the first to enter. She ministered to nationals and foreigners alike for thirteen years. She simply lived her life as an example of Christ, ready at any moment to give an account of the reason for her hope. God is still using her past ministry to change lives in East Asia today.
In addition to her parents, survivors include two daughters, Olivia Li, and Laura Li; one son, Andrew Li; one brother, Stan Parker; and one niece, Courtney Parker, all of Boone. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Martin and Alma Richardson; and her paternal grandparents, Roy and Gladys Parker.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday afternoon, August 23, 2008, at 1:00 o'clock, at Alliance Bible Fellowship. Officiating were Pastor Scott Andrews, Pastor Scott Burns, Pastor Dean Moyer, and Pastor Doug Cheshier.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alliance Bible Fellowship, 1035 NC Hwy. 105 Bypass, Boone, N.C. 28607, or to the Seby Jones Regional Cancer Center, PO Box 2600, Boone, N.C. 28607.

William Howard Thomas
Mr. William Howard Thomas, 100, of 1472 Sage Valley Drive, Mountain City, Tenn., a former resident of Zionville, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at his residence.
He was born March 8, 1908 in Watauga County, a son of the late Marion Francis Thomas and Maggie Church Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a farmer and owner/operator of Howard Thomas Store.
Survivors include one daughter, Joy Thomas and Paul Brown of Mountain City, Tenn.; and two granddaughters, Peggy Vitalle, and Sandy Saville, both of Alexandria, Va. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vienna Thomas; one daughter, Hazel Saville; three sons, James, Paul, and Richard Thomas; one sister, Lizzie Little; and four brothers, Don, Butler, Clint, and Reed Thomas.
Graveside services and burial were conducted Saturday afternoon, August 23, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at the Thomas Cemetery in Zionville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas Cemetery Fund, in care of Joy Thomas, 1472 Sage Valley Drive, Mountain City, Tenn. 37683.
