Appalachian State University rose to the No. 9 spot in the “Best Universities-Master’s in the South” category in U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 America’s Best Colleges Guide. Appalachian tied with the College of Charleston for the ninth-place ranking.
Town denies ASU request to rezone property
Back to the drawing board. Again. Appalachian State University will reassess its options, after the Boone Town Council denied its request to rezone property from single-family residential to university.
Boone voters pass mixed-drink vote
Boone voters overwhelmingly tipped up the electoral glass Tuesday, approving mixed-drink sales within the town limits by a tally of 1,106-408.

Lawsuit against Blowing Rock under way
A civil trial is under way in a lawsuit against the town of Blowing Rock. The lawsuit was filed by Robert Cobb, father of the 12-year-old girl who fell at Glen Burney Falls in August 2004.

Aug. 29: Early dismissal for schools
On Friday, Aug. 29, Watauga County schools will dismiss at noon for students in prekindergarten through eighth-grade and at 1 p.m. for students at Watauga High School. Lunch will be served before students leave, and school buses will run their usual routes. The Extended Learning Center after-school program opens at noon instead of 2:30 p.m. on scheduled early release days. Schools will be closed the following Monday, Sept. 1, for the Labor Day holiday. Early release days are also scheduled for Sept. 10, Oct. 16, and Oct. 17. Schools will be closed on Friday, Oct.10, for a teacher workday. The holiday/snow day program at Hardin Park will be open on Oct. 10 for students registered to attend the program on that day.

Officer cleared in Seven Devils shooting
The Seven Devils police officer involved in a fatal shooting on Jan. 9 has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Watauga County District Attorney Jerry Wilson.
Mixed-drink mailed vote numbers low
With a vote on liquor by the drink in Boone heading for the polls Tuesday, early interest has been steady but not unusually hectic.

August 6 —Fraud was reported at a business on Watauga Village Drive. The victim reported a person used the victim's drivers license to forge a check.
Blowing Rock horse show sprints 85 years
Hundreds of riders, family members and spectators made their way to the L.M. Tate Horse Show Grounds on the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve over the past two weekends for the Hunter/Jumper section of the 85th Annual Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show.
Watauga District Court reports:
August 8 — An order for arrest was issued for Jonathan R. Gaffaney, 37, of 164 Old Shobert Road, Hohenwald, Tenn., for failure to appear on charges of driving while impaired and no operators license. A $1,000 cash bond was set.
