The Lois E. Harrill Senior Center will commemorate 30 years of serving the community with a party open to the public Tuesday, Aug. 26.
“Not only is it a celebration of 30 years, but also we'd like to use it as a way to promote it to the county, let everyone know we are here,” Director Sherri Harmon said.
The event will feature some of the resources available to people over the age of 60 with Wii game tournaments, karaoke and access to a computer lab with working internet service.
Harmon is hoping to gain wireless internet access in the near future so seniors can bring their own lap tops to the center and peruse the internet, while meeting new people and seeing old friends.
Although she took four years off to be a full-time mother, Harmon has worked at the center for 26 of its 30 years.
Harmon said that the center is now seeing the beginning of the baby boomers push through, and hopes to see an increased interest in the center.
With such a large population entering retirement, the center is trying to attract adults over 60 through increased programming and resources available.
Some of the resources available are in home aid services, home delivered meals, medical loan closet and referral services.
The center is located on the Poplar Grove Connector in the Watauga County Human Services building.
The celebration will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information on the event or about the services provided by the senior center, call 265-8090.
