Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

ASU students return in force

The admissions office at Appalachian State University expects to see one of its highest achieving freshman classes move onto campus Friday, Aug. 22.

Watauga district court reports:
August 4 — Dominique D. Piscopo, 26, of 350 Winterberry Trail, Boone, pleaded guilty to driving while license revoked and failure to secure a passenger who is under the age of 16.

DOT will drive more funds into Watauga for secondary roads
Watauga County is scheduled to get $3.15 million in secondary-road improvements next year. The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing during the next county commissioner meeting to hear input on the secondary road plan and seek commissioner recommendations.

County still suffers extreme drought
Watauga County continues to remain classified as enduring "Extreme drought," with drought conditions worse this year than last as stream flows near record lows.

University talks about zoning request
Staff of the Appalachian State university Student Development Office addressed residents of surrounding property adjacent to the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center and Poplar Grove Road about potential rezoning in an open forum Tuesday.

Supervision wheels up at App Skatepark
The Watauga County skate park has new rules and supervision to ensure the facility remains safe.

Pulling weeds

More than 130 marijuana plants were seized Aug. 6 through a joint operation between the Watauga County Sheriff's Office, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the N.C. Office of Crime Control and Public Safety. Pilots and observers from the office of crime control conducted marijuana eradication operations using helicopters to spot the plants. A total of 133 mature marijuana plants, ranging in height from 4 to 7 feet, were seized from various locations throughout Watauga County. The estimated street value of the plants was placed at $332,500. The cases remain under investigation and charges are expected. Chetola downtown project on hold after long meeting
After a four-and-a-half hour special meeting of the Blowing Rock Town Council Monday night, it was decided that the members still did not have enough pertinent information about the proposed Main Street Village project to approve or deny the applicants, Chetola Severn, LLC.

Woman’s van strikes boyfriend following quarrel

A Zionville man was seriously injured Monday evening during a domestic dispute.

Tourism grows amid sluggish economy
The tourism sector continues to grow locally despite concerns over the economy and rising fuel prices.

421 wreck
No injuries were reported in a minor rear-end collision Tuesday morning. Uvette Nicole Bunton, 25, of Butler, Tenn., was traveling south on U.S. 421 in a 1987 Chevrolet Nova, when she struck a 2004 Ford pickup truck driven by Landon Phillips, 31, of West Jefferson. The accident occurred at the U.S. 421 and Grove Street intersection near the Wilco Hess gas station. No one required medical attention. Bunton was cited for failure to reduce speed by the Boone Police Department. Her passenger and owner of the Nova, Misty Arnold, 34, of Elizabethton, Tenn., was cited for allowing a vehicle to be driven without insurance.

A Blowing Rock man was killed Saturday afternoon while traveling toward his home on Blackberry Road.

The majority of the local business community turned out in force for the 59th Annual Awards Luncheon of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce on Friday at the Broyhill Inn & Conference Center.

Watauga County schools make state growth standards for 2007-08
All nine schools in the Watauga County School system achieved North Carolina's standard for expected academic growth by students for the 2007-08 school year. Of the nine, six schools met the standard for high growth.
