Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

Hawksnest Ski & Snow Tubing had already dropped the "Golf" from its original name of Hawksnest Golf & Ski Resort, and now it's losing the "ski" as well.

County schools start back on Aug. 7

After a hot summer, the gears of local schools are starting to move again. The first day of the 2008-09 school year is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7.

Hunger Coalition feeds the needs for bargains
The Health and Hunger Coalition building at 141 Health Center Driver is overflowing with tables, chairs, lamps, glasses, rugs and more in preparation for their gigantic rummage and auction sale. Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, beginning at 8 a.m., the sale is guaranteed to be better than your average rummage sale with items donated by community members and volunteers from the Hunger Coalition.

Boone Police reports:
July 21 —Burglary with forced entry was reported at 9:01 a.m. on the 100 block of Boone Heights Drive. A cash register with money inside and a cash refund check were reported stolen.

ASU students urge higher turnout for Aug. 19 vote
Although most Appalachian State University students will not be in Boone for the Aug. 19 mixed-beverage Referendum, the Student Government Association is doing everything in its power and limited budget to get students to vote in person or through absentee ballots.

Energy Center helps draft wind-energy policy for state
Appalachian State University’s Energy Center helped craft a model wind-energy ordinance for use across the state.


Recovery Education Center opens on State Farm Road
New River Behavioral Health Care has expanded its services to the citizens of Watauga County with the opening of a Recovery Education Center on State Farm Road.

Boone PD requests public's help on suspect who placed bomb at Wal-Mart
On July 30, the Boone Police Department issued a request for public assistance in identifying the person responsible for the explosive device found at Wal-Mart two weeks ago.

Johnson County head football coach arrested for DUI

The head football coach for Johnson County high school was arrested Thursday, July 24, on charges of driving under the influence and a violation of implied consent.

A joint investigation between the Boone Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation led to the seizure of nearly three quarters of a pound of cocaine and the arrests of two Charlotte men.

Watauga sheriff’s reports
Breaking and entering and larceny were reported on the 100 block of One Lone Lane in Boone. The residence was forcibly entering and a laptop computer and an acoustic guitar were reported stolen.

July 16 —Jared William Pardue, 28, of 376 Marbel School Road, Zionville, pleaded guilty to reckless driving to endanger. A charge of improper passing on the right was dismissed.

North Carolina’s back-to-school, tax-free weekend comes early this year, basically giving a seven-percent discount for those bracing for the Aug. 7 opening date for Watauga County schools.  Comment

Watauga County court reports
July 14 — Donald Thomas Ball, 47, of 1024 Monmouth Ave., Durham, was found guilty of speeding and driving while impaired. He was sentenced with 30 days in jail, suspended, 12 months unsupervised probation, 24 hours of community service to be completed within 60 days and assessed a $100 fine and court costs.  Comment

July 14 — Curtis Edwin Leyshon, 51, of 915 N. Pine Run Road, Boone, was arrested on view on charges of disorderly conduct in a public building, littering and resisting a public officer.  Comment
