Former Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul spoke Friday in Boone about what he called his ongoing campaign for liberty.

“People ask me what I’m going to do now that the presidential race has been decided, and I say I’m going to do what I’ve always done, campaign for liberty,” Paul said about his future in politics.

A small, private crowd of just more than 100 supporters gathered at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center as Paul took time away from his family reunion this weekend in the High Country to thank his adament supporters for their help during his presidential campaign.

“One of the main reasons I came here tonight is to tell you how much I appreciate what you have done,” Paul said to his many organizers who aided his campaign in Watauga and surrounding counties.

Paul took the opportunity to discuss his passion for the Constitution and civil liberties with an excited and overwhelmingly receptive crowd.

Stressing the importance of fiscal responsibility, Paul presented his disapproval of what he called the Democrats’ eagerness to spend tax dollars on social welfare and Republicans’ current imperialistic tendencies and wasted funds on increased military expenditures.

In addition to reiterating key points of his platform, Paul informed the audience that his Campaign for Liberty continues with an event in Minneapolis on Sept. 2.

Tickets for the event went on sale today and totaled 6,200 within the first eight hours.
