Registration for fall begins — Watauga County Parks and Recreation is currently accepting registration for youth soccer. The youth soccer program is offered to children ages 5 – 15 (age determined as of Oct. 16, 2008). Six levels of play are offered based on age: under-6, under-8, under-10, under-12, under-15. Whenever possible, teams are formed by geographical location (except for under-15).
Fundraiser under way
T.J. Poulos, 11, of the Tailwind Track Club of Boone, is headed to the 2008 Junior Olympic National track and field finals after winning the 3,000-meter run and finishing second in the 1,500-meter run last weekend in the regional meet in Knoxville, Tenn.

Poulos reaches nationals
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — T.J. Poulos qualified for the 2008 AAU Junior Olympic National track and field meet in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs in the AAU regional meet held last weekend at the University of Tennessee.
Smith to coach team in Ireland
Appalachian State men’s basketball assistant coach and ASU alumnus Ahmad Smith has resigned his position on the Appalachian staff to become the head coach of the Irish SuperLeague’s Shamrock Rovers.
Morganton eliminates Watauga in softball
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This was the mantra the Morganton Storm took into its second meeting in as many days with Watauga’s 13-14 year old All-Stars. It worked as Morganton eliminated Watauga from the District 7 Junior Softball Tournament with a 13-1 victory at the Carroll Complex Monday evening.

MORGANTON — Watauga’s under-18 USSSA baseball team finished its summer season by winning three games in a wood bat tournament held at Shuey Field Saturday and Sunday.
Watauga off to rough start in Junior softball tourney
In a five inning, two-hour marathon, the Morganton Storm wrapped up its 13-14 year old first round playoff match with the Watauga All-Stars in the District 7 Junior Softball All-Star Tournament Saturday in about twenty minutes.

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN — Mark Willis, 32, placed first in the Grizzly bike race Friday morning. Willis, of Charlotte, broke the previous first-place finishing time of 3:10.15 with a heart-pounding 3:04.18.
Patrick, Woods win Bear assault
GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN — The weather was accommodating for the fourteenth annual running of the 5K Bear Assault on Grandfather Mountain.
