Mary Virginia Shelton

Mary Virginia Shelton, 84, of Greensboro and Holden Beach passed away Thursday, July 17, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
She is survived by her husband, Aubrey L Shelton, Jr of the home; one son, Ronald Swaim of Charlotte; three stepsons Guy Shelton and wife, Beverly, of Omaha, Neb., Larry Shelton and wife, July, of Raleigh and Dan Shelton and wife, Lis, of Boone.
She is also survived by several grandchildren, including Walker Shelton and Christopher Shelton of Boone, as well as two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Larry Swaim, and one son, Rusty Swaim.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, 1118 North Elm St. in Greensboro.
Sservices will be held Monday July 21, at 11 a.m. at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, 2100 Fernwood Dr, Greensboro.

Charles Curtis Hughes
Mr. Charles Curtis Hughes, 79, of Canton, passed away Tuesday morning, July 15, 2008, at Aultman Hospital in Ohio.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1928 in Newland, N.C., to the late Jack and Hazel (Oakes) Hughes and lived in the Canton area for 25 years.
Charles had worked for Oaks Construction and later retired from Brown Brothers Construction.
He was an active member of Freedom Baptist Fellowship in Brewster. He enjoyed mountain trout fishing, hunting, NASCAR, reading and the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers.
Mr. Hughes is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Janeen (Cseak) Hughes; one daughter, Deborah Calloway and husband, the Rev. Dale Calloway, of Massillon, Ohio; two sons, Terry Curtis Hughes and wife, Missy, and Jerry Charles Hughes and wife, Christine,,, all of Aiken, S.C.; three sisters, Pauline Hughes of Newland, Sandra Guinn and husband, Jerry, of Elk Park, and Wanda Carpenter and husband, James ,of Canton, Ohio; one brother, Clyde Hughes of Newland; and by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Jack and Hazel (Oakes) Hughes, he was preceded in death by his grandfather, the Rev. Garfield Hughes; one brother, Michael Hughes; and by one daughter, Sharon Kay Hughes.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Newland, with his nephew the Rev. Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Hughes Memorial Cemetery in Roaring Creek, N.C.
The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. prior to services on Saturday, July 19, at Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Newland.

Mary Clawson Armstrong
Mrs. Mary Clawson Armstrong, 95, of 806 E. Main St., Cherryville, N.C., died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
Mrs. Armstrong was born in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Robert Hamilton Clawson and Flora Bledsoe Clawson. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Cherryville and the Amanda Armstrong Circle.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Joe Armstrong and Denese, of Mooresville; three grandchildren, Joanna Lewis, Lance Armstrong and Brodie Armstrong, all of Mooresville; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Armstrong is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Services were conducted at noon on Tuesday, July 15, at the First Wesleyan Church, Cherryville, with the Rev. Mark Poe officiating. Burial was in the City Memorial Cemetery, Cherryville.

Roy Lee Coffey
Mr. Roy Lee Coffey Sr., 82, of 210 Henkel St., Blowing Rock, died Sunday evening, July 13, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Coffey was born Feb. 16, 1926 in Caldwell County, a son of the late Fred and Octavia Loudermelt Coffey. He was a retired mechanical engineer for the Sanyo Corporation and served in the United States Army in World War II.
Mr. Coffey is survived by two daughters, Terry Coffey of Missouri and Candice Coffey of Blowing Rock; five sons, Guy Coffey, Greg Coffey of Chicago, Ill., Roy Lee Coffey Jr. of Vilas, Brian Coffey and wife, Victoria, of Charlotte, and Randy Coffey of Cabot, Ark.; one brother, Everette Coffey of Blowing Rock; and one sister, Viola Church of Blowing Rock. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Helen Goacher Coffey, and a number of brothers and sisters.
Funeral arrangements in West Memphis, Ark., for Mr. Coffey are incomplete at this time.

Mr. Lewis L. Carroll
Mr. Lewis L. Carroll, 87, passed away July 7, 2008.
Surviving family members are his wife, Wilma Chambers Carroll; three sons, Terry, Rusty and Fleming; daughters by marriage, Shannon and Kim; grandsons, Joshua and Jonathan; siblings, Winford Hipp, Peggy Phillips, Sarah Jaggers, George Wayne Hipp and Vivian Manes, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Judy Tidwell of Wilmington, N.C.
A graveside committal was held July 10, 2008, at Unity Moravian Church. A memorial service is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at Unity Moravian Church, 8700 Concord Church Road, Lewisville, N.C.
The family is grateful to the many representatives of Hospice & Palliative Center of Winston-Salem.

George R. Clemens
Mr. George R. Clemens, 74, of 236 Mine Branch Road, Blowing Rock, died Thursday afternoon, July 10, 2008, at his home.
He was born Oct. 12, 1933 in Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of the late John Murray and Virginia Clemens Wright.
Mr. Clemens had retired in January 2008 from Clemens Welding and Machine Shop, now owned by his son, James Clemens. He loved antiques, travel, former years of hunting and fishing, and loved to read the Bible and war histories. His schooling took him to Nashville, Tenn. He graduated from Nashville Auto and Diesel, numerous welding courses in Troy, Ohio, and Peoria, Ill., and he was a certified welder. He was a former member of Gideons, a certified gunsmith, and a master mechanic.
Mr. Clemens dearly loved his Sunday school class at Rutherwood Baptist Church, where he also taught Sunday school. He was a deacon at Rutherwood for many years and sang in the choir. He was an active member of Ohio International Operating Engineers. Mr. Clemens served in the 11th Airborne during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Glenola Snyder Clemens; two daughters, Debra Hedges of Blowing Rock, and Barbara Goldsmith and husband, Bud, of Winston-Salem; one son, James Clemens and wife, Michelle, of Blowing Rock; six granddaughters, Renee Clemens and Steve of Boone, Megan Meredith and husband, Ryan, of Nashville, Tenn., Jenny Washburn and husband, Nathan, of Memphis, Tenn., Jocelyn Marshall and husband, Philp, of Winston-Salem, and Faye and Leah Clemens, both of Blowing Rock; two grandsons, Brian Lattie of Winston-Salem, and Michael Hedges of Blowing Rock; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorotha Meador of Salem, Va. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Clemens; one grandson, William Goldsmith; and one granddaughter, Kristen Jaklitsch.
Services were conducted Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Rutherwood Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Gary Lawrence, the Rev. Doug Cheshier, the Rev. Scott Lester and Boyden Atwood. Burial followed at the Rutherwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Richard Lee Ellis
Mr. Richard Lee Ellis, 54, of 324 Skyview St., Deep Gap, died Saturday evening, July 12, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Ellis was born Sept. 12, 1953 in Logan County, W.Va., a son of the late Seabert Chester and Minnie Bragg Ellis. He was a retired cashier and cook for the Mountain House Restaurant in Boone and a member of Community Baptist Church in Mount Mourne, N.C. He is a former resident of Salisbury.
Mr. Ellis is survived by Betty Austin of the home; two daughters, Jade Ellis Taylor of Mocksville and Brook Ellis of San Angelo, Texas; two sons, Kevin Ellis and wife, Christy, of Houston, Texas, and Tyler Ellis of Midland, Mich.; one grandson, Austin Ellis of Houston; three sisters, Mable Hatfield of Salisbury, Joyce Reams and husband, Fred, of Mooresville, and Ellie Lambeth and husband, David, of Salisbury; and one brother, Dennis Ellis and wife, Kathy, of Salisbury.
He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. J.R. Speece. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Hampton Funeral Service.
The family has respectfully requested no food.

Marjorie K. McDonald
Mrs. Marjorie Presnell McDonald, 77, of Vilas, died Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. McDonald is survived by her husband, Millard Hess of the home; one son, Timothy McDonald and wife, Melissa, of Vilas; three daughters, Barbara Noeyack and husband, David, of Columbia, Tenn., Deborah Sergey and husband, Chris,, of Taylor, Mich., and Rebecca McDonald of Asheville; two brothers, Richard Presnell and wife, Chloe, of Banner Elk, and Junior Presnell of Sugar Grove; and one sister, Lula Adkins of Detroit, Mich. She is also survived by four grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dewey McDonald; her father and mother, Sheridan and Nancy Hicks Presnell; two brothers, James Presnell and Avery Presnell; and three sisters Mary Urban, Lucinda Trivette and Lena Hicks.
Services were conducted Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating were the Rev. Quincy Norris and the Rev. Gordon Noble. Burial followed in the Presnell Family Cemetery.

Mr. Bernard Lovill Trivette
Mr. Bernard Lovill Trivette, 67, of Connelly Springs, N.C., passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Trivette was born Feb. 6, 1941 to the late Edison R. Trivette and Lottie Pearl Miller Trivette. He last worked for Impact Furniture as a machine operator. He also loved to garden.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Joyce Ann Holman Trivette of the home; one son, Michael Trivette, and three daughters, Rebecca T. Pierce, Tina Trivette and Pamela T. Ramirez, all of Connelly Springs; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Curtis Trivette of Hickory, Glaydon Trivette of Todd and Worley and Terry Trivette, both of Lenoir; and three sisters, Lorene Nelson of Lenoir, Verbel February of Hildebran and Sherry Dula of Lenoir; and by two aunts.
The family will receive friends at Mackie-High Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, July 15, 2008, from 6 to 8.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church in Watauga County with the Rev. Bruce Miller and the Rev. Delmar James officiating. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Allen Patterson Watson
Mr. Allen Patterson Watson, 62 of West Jefferson, N.C., went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 while surrounded by his family at home. He had battled prostate cancer for eight and a half years that had metastasized to the bone.
Born Nov. 20, 1945 in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Margaret B. Watson of West Jefferson and the late Charles Wake Watson.
He graduated from Hampton High School, Hampton, Va., in 1964, and served his country in the U.S. Army in the 1st Calvary Division, Air Mobile, in the Vietnam War, earning the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters while flying more than 100 air missions over hostile territory, including the Battle of La Drang Valley.
He also earned the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960), Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army).
Returning to the states, he earned his college degree from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.,while working full time on nuclear subs at the Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, Va.
He then entered a career in nuclear energy, working at several nuclear power plants across the U.S., retiring from Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plants Constellation Energy, Lusby, Md.
He was very church and community oriented, serving on many church committees and community boards before retiring to his beloved mountain home in 2003. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Boone, serving as a devoted adult Sunday school teacher.
He was an avid model railroader modeling the C&O (HO Gauge) for 35 years.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Connie Caperton Watson and one daughter, Amanda Marie Watson, of West Jefferson; one brother, Charles Wake Watson Jr. and wife, Barbara, of La Porte, Texas; and one stepbrother, Larry Watson of Winston-Salem.
A viewing was held at the Boone Family Funeral Home, West Jefferson, on Saturday, July 12, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Services were held on Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Boone. Prior to the service a viewing was held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial followed at the Blue Ridge Baptist Cemetery on Park Vista Road, West Jefferson.
