Games update: Taming the Grizzly

 A Charlotte cyclist beat last year's record by 6 seconds in the Grizzly Metric Century Bike Ride on Friday at the foot of Grandfather Mountain during the 53rd annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Mark Willis finished the 65-mile trek in 3:04.18, beating the 2007 record set by Andy micheltree of 3:10. Just behind Willis’ rear wheel finished two Boone residents — Noah Niwinski at 3:04.43 and Ross Bowden at 3:04.49. Beth Frye won the women's division, beating fellow Boone resident Heidi Campbell at 3:22. — By Jason Reagan

Bearing it all

The weather was accommodating for the fourteenth annual running of the Bear. Parting clouds and rolling fog proved to be just the trick for runner Ryan Woods, 29, of Boone, NC. Pioneers close out summer

The summer is ending for Watauga’s USSSA 18-under baseball team. Just one final weekend of baseball separates the summer season from either football for some players and fall baseball for others.

Appalachian wrestlers open with home match
A season-opening home quad meet and trips spanning from Troy, N.Y. to Reno, Nev. highlight the Appalachian State wrestling team’s 2008-09 schedule, which was announced Wednesday by coach Paul Mance. In all, the team grapples at home five times.

ASU women travel to Big East’s Georgetown
Thirteen home games, a trip to the nation’s capital and 20 Southern Conference tilts highlight the 2008-09 Appalachian State women's basketball schedule, head coach Darcie Vincent announced on Wednesday.

Wilkes National outlasts Watauga juniors

When Wilkes National and Watauga took the field Monday afternoon at Optimist Park in the District 7 Junior League All-Star Tournament, it was obvious that players and fans alike were in for an interesting evening of baseball.

Watauga National 11-12s eliminated
WEST JEFFERSON — Watauga National lost 9-2 to Alleghany in an elimination game of the District 7 Little League All-Star Tournament Monday night in Ashe County.

Storm under-11s win

Though Watauga National beat Watauga American 5-0 in an elimination game of the District 7 11-12 year old Little League All-Star Tournament, those numbers are a bit deceiving.

Players Academy begins July 7 — The Watauga Players Soccer Academy will be held July 7-11 at the Watauga High School Soccer Complex.

Altenhof expected to sign deal
Appalachian State shortstop Jason Altenhof will sign a contract Monday with the Baltimore Orioles, sources say.
