Faye Brown Greene

Mrs. Faye Brown Greene, 87, of Highway 194 North, Boone, the Sands community, died Monday morning, June 30, 2008, at her home.
She was born Feb. 8, 1921 in Avery County, to William Oren and Allie Jones Brown.
Mrs. Greene was a homemaker, a faithful member of Howard’s Creek Baptist Church, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include five daughters, Janice Wellborn of Sumter, S.C., Judy Shepherd of North Wilkesboro, Jackie Adams and husband, Sam, and Gail Hauser and husband, Alan, all of Boone; and Katie Allen and husband, Mike, of Clayton; four sisters, Gladys Payne and husband, Earl, of Morganton, and Pearl Norris and Gerry Wilcox and husband, Kenneth, and Thelma Greene, all of Boone; one sister-in-law, Helen Brown of Boone; and one brother-in-law, Frank Norris, of Boone; four grandsons, Andrew Shepherd of North Wilkesboro, Greene Shepherd of Augusta, Ga., Trey Wellborn of Sumter, S.C., and Kelly Gardner of Cheraw, S.C.; five granddaughters, Candace Wellborn of Sumter, S.C., Mollie Nichols of Raleigh, Emily Adams of Efland, Stacie Walker of Boone and Jacqueline Walker of Winston-Salem; two step-granddaughters, Debi Waechter of Lenoir and Mary Hauser of Raleigh; three great-grandsons, John Andrew Shepherd, Jack Wellborn and Samuel Shepherd; three great-granddaughters, Caitlin and Heidi Shepherd and Lilly Wellborn; and three step-great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Madeline and Marie-Claire Waechter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jack Greene; three brothers, Wilson, Steve and Roby Brown; one sister, Frost Norris; and her parents, W.O. and Allie Jones Brown.
Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, July 2, 2008, at 2 o’clock at Howard’s Creek Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mark Chaney and the Rev. Joe London. Burial followed in the Sands Cemetery.

Esther B. Proffitt
Mrs. Esther B. Woodring Proffitt, 79, of Willoughby, Ohio, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in the Manor Care Nursing Facility with her family at her side.
She was born Sept. 11, 1928 in Boone, N.C., a daughter of the late Frank Lewis and Mattie Elnora Moretz Woodring.
Mrs. Proffitt was a Lake County resident for 51 years, living in Willoughby, Ohio. She taught ceramics, and was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She was a volunteer for the Cancer Society, a very giving person helping and participating in medical research studies. Mrs. Proffitt was very devoted to her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Loyd Silas Proffitt, who was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. They were married for 45 years.
Survivors include her children, Shelia Proffitt Hoffman and husband, Mark, of Willoughby, Ohio; Steven W. Proffitt and wife, Denise Tripepi, of Willoughby, Ohio; grandchildren, Matthew Steven Hoffman, Jacob Kyle Proffitt, and Andrew Henry Hoffman.
Memorial services were conducted Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at the McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home in Willoughby, Ohio, with the Rev. Brian Bagley-Bonner officiating. Burial was private.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mrs. Proffitt’s name, to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 East 185th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44119; and that you always make sure to tell your loved ones that you love them.

Marjorie Armstrong Arnsdorff

Mrs. Marjorie Armstrong Arnsdorff, 89, of Boone, died Monday morning, June 30, 2008.
She was born Oct. 4, 1918 in Savannah, Ga., a daughter of the late Robert and Marye Thomson Armstrong.
Mrs. Arnsdorff was the wife of the late Herman L. Arnsdorff, owner and operator of Robb& Stucky Furniture in Fort Meyers. She was a homemaker and a member of Rivers Edge Church.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Marion Arnsdorff and wife, Kathe, of West Jefferson; two daughters, Dianna Ford of Germantown, Tenn., and Marjorie Elaine Arnsdorff and husband, Dave Oshinski, of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Gloria Gilpin of Charleston, West Virginia; one granddaughter, Michelle Flores of Burleson, Tex.; and three grandsons, Mark Arnsdorff of West Jefferson, Chris Arnsdorff of Bella Vista, Ark., and David Arnsdorff of West Jefferson.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elaine Watson and Evelyn Freeman.
Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, July 3, 2008, at 3:00 o'clock, at Hall of Christ Stilling the Waters Chapel in Fort Myers, Fla. Officiating will be the Rev. Jim Holbrook. Burial will follow in the Fort Myers Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 2:00 until 3:00 o'clock, at Hall of Christ Stilling the Waters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Alma Owens Craft Lewis
Mrs. Alma Owens Craft Lewis, 86, of Purlear, formerly of Ashe County, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Avante Care Center in Wilkesboro.
She was born April 2, 1922.
Survivors include two sons, Gene R. Craft of Boone, N.C. and Rev. Wayne Craft of N. Wilkesboro, N.C.; two daughters, Alice Faye Osborne of Crumpler, N.C. and Audrie Gaye Eller of Wilkesboro, N.C.; one sister, Margaret McCoy of West Jefferson, N.C.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Febie Owens; infant daughters, Ruth and Gladys; and son, Clarence Craft.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at Badger Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny White, the Rev. Ronnie Bumgarner, the Rev. David Sheelor and the Rev. Wayne Craft officiating. Mrs. Lewis will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Riverview Primitive Church Cemetery.

John Robert McNeely
Mr. John Robert McNeely, 88, of Boone, died Monday morning, April 14, 2008, at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.
He was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Mecklenburg County, a son of the late Samuel Egbert and Nellie Mae Maxwell McNeely. Mr. McNeely’s paternal grandfather and namesake, was founder and the first mayor of Mooresville, N.C.
Mr. McNeely was a retired salesman and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Hal Stevenson McNeely; two sons, Robert Hal McNeely of Boone and John Michael McNeely and wife, Karen, of Asheboro, N.C.; one daughter, Marsha Carol McNeely-Spitzen and husband, Arnold John Spitzen; two grandsons, Benjamin Michael McNeely and Thomas Albert McNeely; and one sister, Eloise McNeely Howard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nell McNeely Owensby and Elizabeth McNeely Steele.
Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone on Sunday, July 6, at 2 p.m., officiated by Dr. Ron Bowie.

Mary Frances Vollmer
Ms. Mary Frances Vollmer, 97, of Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living, Boone, died Wednesday morning, June 25, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 14, 1910 in South Milwaukee, Wisc., a daughter of the late Francis Anthony and Mary Elizabeth Hogan Vollmer.
Ms. Vollmer was a retired secretary for Holly Sugar in Colorado Springs.
Survivors include one brother, Joseph F. Vollmer of Boone; and three nephews, Joseph James Vollmer of Marrietta, Ga., Robert W. Vollmer of Saltville, Va. and Fort Meyers, Fla., and Michael E. Vollmer of Boone.
A funeral mass was held Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Boone.

Herbert M. Aldridge
Mr. Herbert M. Aldridge, 92, of 568 Boulder Gardens Road, Boone, the Foscoe community, died Saturday morning, June 28, 2008, at his home.
He was born Sept. 30, 1915 in Watauga County, a son of the late H.O. and Bird Coffey Aldridge.
Mr. Aldridge was the retired owner and operator of Herbert Aldridge Nursery and served in the Merchant Marines. He was also a sawmill owner and operator. He was a Mason and Shriner and a member of Foscoe Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Aldridge and wife, Margie, and Chip Aldridge and wife, Debra, all of Foscoe; one daughter, Suzanne Crum and husband, Wesley, of Foscoe; two granddaughters, Christie Aldridge and Kelsey Crum, both of Foscoe; two great-granddaughters, Charity Dollar and Valerie Dollar, both of Foscoe; one brother, Blan Aldridge and wife, Katie, of Asheville; one sister, Nancy Chamblin of Winston-Salem; and a special caregiver Karen McCard. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Aldridge; one sister, Bina McLean; and two brothers, Dane Aldridge and Joe Aldridge.
Services will be conducted Monday evening, June 30, 2008, at 8:00 o'clock, at Foscoe Christian Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Pastor Lance Hostetter and Pastor Ken Caswell. Masonic graveside rites and burial will be conducted Tuesday morning, at 10:00 o'clock, at Foscoe Community Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Ethan Thomas Gilmore
Ethan Thomas Gilmore, beloved infant son, died May 5, 2008 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, Lenoir, N.C.
Ethan Thomas is cherished by his loving parents, Alex Gilmore of Lewisville, N.C., and Amber Johnson of Millport, N.Y.; paternal grandparents, Larry and Anne Gilmore of Lewisville, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Harry “Pete” and Robin Johnson, of Millport, N.Y.; and maternal great-grandfather, Robert Smalley of Beaver Dams, N.Y. Ethan is also survived by his aunts, Ashland Gilmore, Emily, Lydia and Laura Johnson; uncles, Jared and Caleb Johnson; and cousins, Dominick and Cameron Johnson.
Ethan’s eyes never saw the light of day, but he is now, and forever will be, beholding the beauty of the Bright Morning Star, even God Our Father who gave him as a gift to us. Your gift of love you brought into our lives will always be remembered and never forgotten.

Kelly Dwayne Hodges
Mr. Kelly Dwayne Hodges, 35, of Hwy 105 South, Banner Elk, the Foscoe community, died Saturday morning, June 28, 2008.
He was born Oct. 24, 1972 in Watauga County.
Mr. Hodges attended Foscoe Christian Church. He was a graduate of Watauga High School and the TransAM Truck Driving School in Kansas.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Tomson Hodges of Banner Elk; three children, Kaitlyn Hodges and twin sons, Aiden and Adam Hodges, all of the home; his mother, Shelia Aldridge Marshburn and husband, Dennis, of Foscoe; and his father, Reece Hodges and wife, Kathy, of Hampton, Tenn.; his grandmother, Iris Aldridge of Banner Elk; his aunt and uncle Kay and David Yates of Banner Elk; his mother and father-in-law, Barbara and Peter Tomson of Foscoe; and his sister-in-law, Kathy Dockery of Anchorage, Alaska. A number of cousins also survive.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Foscoe Christian Church, officiated by Minister Lance Hostetter. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock, one hour prior to services, at the church.
At other times, the family will be at the home of Mrs. Iris Aldridge, 9828 Highway 105 South, Banner Elk.

William Kemp Mauney Jr.
Former State Senator William Kemp Mauney, Jr., 90, of 200 East Gold Street, Kings Mtn., N.C., died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Cleveland County, Shelby, N.C.
He was born August 15, 1917, the son of the late William Kemp and Sarah Hoffman Mauney.
Mr. Mauney graduated from Kings Mountain City School and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, N.C. He later served on the Board of Trustees for Lenoir-Rhyne College.
Upon graduation from Lenoir-Rhyne he was a pioneer in the N.C. Hosiery business. Mr. Mauney started Mauney Hoisery Mills in the basement of his father’s Cotton Mill. Through the years the company grew to employ over 300 people and was a major supplier of socks to the United States Government.
Many servicemen shared with him the joy of seeing socks arrive stamped Mauney Hosiery, Kings Mountain, N.C., USA. He was the 1991 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Catawba Valley Hosiery Association.
He was instrumental in starting many other businesses, Carolina Throwing, Inc., Lyntex Hosiery, Can-do Hosiery, Gaye Hosiery, Cleveland Hosiery, L & L Hosiery, RDS Hosiery, B and B Dairy Farm, and Kings Mountain Motor Inn. He was longtime board member of the Cleveland County Fair.
In the 1960’s Mr. Mauney entered politics and served until the 70’s in the North Carolina House of Representatives and the North Carolina Senate. He served on many committees under Governor’s Robert W. Scott, and James B. Hunt, Jr. and introduced numerous bills into Legislation.
In 1974 he was recognized for unselfish support to Law Enforcement Officers and Fire Fighters of Cleveland County.
Mr. Mauney, for 66 years, has been part of a group of several business men who provide a Christmas meal for any civil servant in the Kings Mountain area.
He was a life-long member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church serving in many church capacities.
He also served on the Board of Blowing Rock Methodist Church during his 30 years of summer residence in Blowing Rock, N.C.
He was a charter member of the Kings Mountain Lions Club serving 70 continuous years and a former Jaycee.
He founded the William Kemp and Mary S. Mauney Foundation to provide many students scholarships and financial assistance and funding for local food banks and crisis ministries.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Elizabeth Simpson Mauney, of Kings Mtn., N.C.; a son, William Kemp Mauney, III and wife, Debbie, of Kings Mtn. N.C.; a grandson, William Kemp Mauney, IV, of Banner Elk, N.C.; and granddaughter, Mary Amelia Mauney, of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Sarah Mauney Faunce and husband, David, of Kings Mtn., N.C.; their sons, David Britton Faunce, III and wife, Bridgett; and great-grandsons, Blake Faunce, of Alpharetta, Ga. and Justin Howard Faunce and wife, Rachel; and great-granddaughter, Savannah, and great-grandson, Byers, of Cornelius, N.C.; granddaughter,Natalie Turner Manning and husband, Michael; great-granddaughters Mary Leigh Elizabeth Manning, and Charlotte Avery Manning, of St. Louis, Mo.; grandson, Rowland Goodrich Turner, III and wife, Nikki; and great-grandson, Zachary Alexander Turner of Ellabell, Ga.; grandson, Ryan Broadwell and wife, Elaina; and great-granddaughter, Ainsleigh, of Austin, Tex.; granddaughter, Jennifer Jo Broadwell, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; son-in-law, Jerry Broadwell and wife, Harriett, of Kings Mtn., N.C.; sister-in-law, Mrs. James B. (Sara) Simpson, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla; brother, Miles Mauney and wife, Dorothy, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Ernest Mauney, David Mauney, and George Mauney; and two daughters, Mary Leigh Broadwell and Martha Jane Mauney.
Services will be conducted Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at 11 a.m., at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain, N.C., with the Rev. William Jeffcoat, pastor of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and the Rev. Paul Huddle, college roommate and former Missionary to Japan. Interment will be in the William Kemp Mauney Family Mausoleum, Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday evening, June 30, 2008, at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mtn., N.C.

Mary Frances Vollmer
Ms. Mary Frances Vollmer, 97, of Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living, Boone, died Wednesday morning, June 25, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.

Stephen Michael White
Stephen Michael White, 14 years old, died May 10, 2008 in Gyeongsan, South Korea from drowning. The police investigation continues.
Stephen was born June 28, 1993 in Clyde, N.C., to Stephannie White at Haywood County Hospital. Known as Stephen in the USA, he used the nickname “Mike” in South Korea to distinguish his name from his mother’s.
Stephen grew up in Waynesville and then Boone, N.C., while his mother attended Appalachian State University. Stephen had been living in South Korea with his mother, an instructor for Yeungnam University, for the past four years and attended private academy while learning Korean and Chinese languages. He has traveled to Thailand, Japan and China during those years. He spent his spare time and allowance on rescuing street dogs, bringing them home, taking them to the vet, housetraining them and then placing them in a new home. His goal was to work with animals as an adult.
He also was a student volunteer in KOTESOL (Korean and Other Teachers of English as a Second Language). He has appeared on stage in the play “Sorry Wrong Number” while participating in the Hoseo University English Drama Club in Cheonan South Korea.
Survivors include his mother, Stephannie White; and great-grandmother, Minnie B. Jones of Clarksdale, Miss.; great-aunts and uncles, Eva and Buddy Almon, Emogene and Curtis Burrell, Cecil Allen Jones, and Marshall and Jamie Jones, all from Mississippi, and Ronnie and Georgia White of Mobile, Ala.; grandmother and step-grandfather, Mollie Mae and Devan White of Waynesville, N.C.; and aunt, Rebecca White of Italy, and uncle Woodrow D. White.
Stephen’s memorial service was held June 28, 2008 in Gyeongsan, South Korea. Due to the continuing investigation into Stephen’s untimely death, a time and date for his memorial in North Carolina has not been set as yet. He will be interred at Dickerson Cemetery near Kosciusko, Miss. Jordon Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.
