Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

Robbery suspects surrender

Two people police say robbed the Foscoe branch of High Country Bank have turned themselves in, a press releases states.

Games update: Taming the Grizzly

A Charlotte cyclist beat last year's record by 6 seconds in the Grizzly Metric Century Bike Ride on Friday at the foot of Grandfather Mountain during the 53rd annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Mark Willis finished the 65-mile trek in 3:04.18, beating the 2007 record set by Andy micheltree of 3:10. Just behind Willis’ rear wheel finished two Boone residents — Noah Niwinski at 3:04.43 and Ross Bowden at 3:04.49. Beth Frye won the women's division, beating fellow Boone resident Heidi Campbell at 3:22. — By Jason Reagan

What’s in the state budget?
The N.C. General Assembly has approved a $21.4 billion budget that earmarks $4.2 million in planning money for a new nursing education center at Appalachian State University.

No major injuries in crash into building

A Raleigh man was injured Thursday when his vehicle crashed through a vacant storefront in the Highland Commons shopping center on N.C. 105. The accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. when Warren Stone, 87, was attempting to park his vehicle in the space directly in front of the business. According to police reports, Stone's foot slipped from the brake pedal to the accelerator, causing the vehicle to lunge forward. The vehicle went over a curb, crossed the sidewalk and proceeded through the front window into the store. The car came to rest against the back wall, causing an estimated $5,000 to $6,000 in damage. Stone suffered facial lacerations and was transported to Watauga Medical Center for treatment by Watauga Medics. Stone's passenger, Annabelle Stone, was uninjured. Both were wearing seat belts, though the air bags did not deploy. The Boone Fire Department and Boone Police Department also responded to the scene. Medical-clinic construction will proceed following BOA reversal
Following the reversal of a town of Boone Board of Adjustment vote in Superior Court, town officials have not yet commented about the decision which will apparently open the way for a medical clinic’s construction.

Watauga sheriff’s reports:
June 15 —Larceny was reported on acreage off Lee South Road in Boone. An unknown quantity of ginseng plants were reported stolen.

A dark horse has entered the starting gate in the District 93 N.C. House of Representatives race.

DOT: Daniel Boone Parkway remains in park
If Daniel Boone needed to use his namesake road around town to track buffalo and elk, he’d likely starve to death before the pavement was cold.

Humane Society sale kicks off July 25
The Watauga Humane Society is preparing to host its 27th annual tag sale on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26 at the National Guard Armory.


Shelter Rock will give away food
Shelter Rock’s Day of Blessing for Watauga County is coming up on Saturday, July 12.The Christian nonprofit organization will provide food, toiletries and other items, including gift items, to local families, with distribution available to anyone. Shelter Rock president Steven Reese said there were enough donated goods to serve more than 100 people.
