The Foscoe Volunteer Fire Department has expanded into the Valle Crucis area. The department opened a second station on Dewitt Barnett Road, a short distance from Broadstone Road.
Mike Shook, fire chief for Foscoe, said he hopes the new building will help better serve the people of Valle Crucis. There are seven members of the department living in the area and those volunteers will now be closer to accessing trucks and equipment.

The substation will be home to a new 2,000-gallon, four-wheel driver tanker, which was purchased specifically for the new location. An older 1,250-gallon pumper truck has also been moved to the new location.
Prior to the substation, which opened in early June, members drove to the station located on N.C. 105 south of Foscoe Family Billiards to drive trucks to the scene of an emergency.
The department consists of one full-time paid position, one part-time paid position, and 26 volunteer firefighters and first responders.
Shook estimated the department responds to approximately 180-220 emergency calls per year.
