Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

‘The Immigrant’
“The Immigrant,” a gefilte fish out of water tale, is a true life-based story about two Eastern European Jews who immigrated to a small Texas town in 1909. The Blowing Rock Stage Company performs the heartwarming and humorous play June 13-22 at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock. Performance times are June 13 at 8 p.m., June 14 at 2 and 8 p.m., June 15 at 2 p.m., June 18 at 8 p.m. (talkback night), June 19 at 2 and 8 p.m., June 20 at 8 p.m., June 21 at 2 and 8 p.m. and June 22 at 2 p.m.Tickets are $26 ($27 for Friday and Saturday night performances) and$14 for students and are available by calling the box office at (828) 295-9627. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.HayesCenter.org.


Snakes alive!

Catherine Durgin, a junior journalism major at Appalachian State University, helps young campers learn about wildlife in a National Park Service traveling exhibit. Durgin, from Statesville, is one of several camp counselors with Appalachian’s Camp UREC, a day camp for children in the 1st-8th grades. Operated by University Recreation, the camp provides children from the High Country a safe, instructional environment where they can explore a variety of fitness, sports and outdoor activities during the summer months. Repealing county powers: Bill would stymie tax authority
With a land-transfer tax proving unpopular with voters, the General Assembly may be removing it as a revenue option for local governments.

Newest traffic signal arrives
Watauga County will soon have one of the state’s newest types of traffic signals, designed to make left turns easier and safer. A light at the signalized intersection of U.S. 421 and Bamboo Road (SR 1514) will feature a series of left-turn signals to indicate stops, cautions and protected turns.

Watauga County sheriff’s reports
May 26 —Dominque Dore Piscopo, 26, of 469 Willard Johnson Road, Vilas, was served with a criminal summons on a charge of a school attendance violation. She is scheduled to appear in district court on June 10.

School board honors retiring Short
The Watauga County Board of Education honored retiring superintendent Bobbie Short at its monthly meeting, held Monday, June 9. The meeting was Short’s last official board meeting, ending her five-year tenure with the school system.

Emergency Fest moves to ASU campus
The Watauga County Firefighters Association, in conjunction with Appalachian State University, are gearing up for a day of serious fun this Saturday.

Grand jury indicts woman in infant-death case

A Deep Gap woman was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter following the death of an infant girl. Comment on this story

The former Appalachian State University student charged with filing a false police report that lead to the first-ever campus lockdown was sentenced Tuesday in Watauga District Court.

Watauga County briefly emerged from its extreme drought to suffer thunderstorms and damaging hail. Localized weather resulted in storms in some portions of Watauga County, but Beech Mountain was particularly hard hit.

The Appalachian State University Board of Trustees met Friday, June 6, for its regular meeting. The meeting’s early action included the swearing in of David Mofford, newly elected student body president. The board then voted to grant professor emeritus status to Harriette Buchanan, Alice Naylor, Jane Nowacek, O’Hyun Park and Joan Woodward.
