Kathleen Mast Austin
Mrs. Kathleen Mast Austin, 92, widow of Mr. Samuel “Sam” Austin, of Dobson, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 2, 2008.
She was born in Watauga County on May 25, 1916 to the late James Taylor and Effie Wilson Mast.
Mrs. Austin was a faithful member of Dobson First Baptist Church as long as her health permitted and was retired from Chatham Manufacturing.
Survivors include four sisters, Pauline Mast Brown of Charlotte, Sylvia Mast Phillips of Reidsville, Nora Mast Haymore of Dobson and Sarah Mast Norris of Boone; a niece, Jeannie Bickett; two nephews, Ted Mast and James C. Greene; and several other nieces.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by a stepmother, Madge Greene Mast; a sister, Maple Mast Greene; a brother, Taylor Mast; and a nephew, Ed Greene.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2008, in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson with burial to follow in the Dobson City Cemetery. Rev. Jennie Bickett conducted the services.

Arthur McTyre ‘Mack’ Banner
Mr. Arthur McTyre “Mack” Banner, 79, of Butler, Tenn., died Monday, June 2, 2008, at his home.
He was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Watauga County, the Sugar Grove community, to the late Arthur McTyre Banner and Alice Combs Banner.
Mr. Banner retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sgt., having served in the Korean War and served in Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Brown Banner of Butler, Tenn.; two sons, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur McTyre “Art” Banner retired, and wife Karen, of North Dakota, and Banian Banner of Butler, Tenn.; daughters, Judy Davis and husband, Jay, of Mountain City, Tenn., Dawn Howard and husband, Mike, of Chesterfield, Missouri, Alice Isaacs and husband, Shane, of Mountain City, Tenn., Billie Stout and fiancée, Tom Dugger, of Butler, Tenn., and Carolyn Hendrix of Hudson; nine granddaughters; four grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Helen Williams of Zionville, Charlotte Martin of Boone, and Eva Nell Alexander of Newland; and three brothers, Martin Banner of Foscoe, John Banner of Edgefield, S.C., and Bill Banner of Vilas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son; seven sisters; and three brothers.
A memorial service will be conducted at Bakers Gap Baptist Church in Mountain City, Tenn. at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 6. Rev. Dennis Peterson and the Rev. Douglas Ranshaw will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery assisted by military honor guard.

Mason Robert Walsh
Mason Robert Walsh, 1/2 day old, passed away on June 3, 2008 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
He was born on June 2, 2008 and he was the son of Jeremy Walsh and Heather Greene of Hickory.

John Hardin Councill Sr.
Mr. John Hardin Councill Sr., 78, of Brookside Drive, Boone, died Saturday evening, May 31, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. 
He was born Nov. 25, 1929 in Watauga County, to Edward Tracy and Grace McNinch Councill.
Mr. Councill was a member of Boone United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Watauga Wood Products from 1961 to 2005 and was a real estate developer. For more than 50 years, he served on the board of directors of Watauga Medical Center and was a board member for the High Country Bank. Mr. Councill was a recipient of the Alfred Adams Leadership Award and held memberships in the Daniel Boone Fishing Club and the Morgan Car Owners Group South.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Orr Ventress Councill; two sons, John Councill, Jr. of Boone and Ben Councill and Tamela Gragg of Blowing Rock; one daughter, Tracy Dee Councill and husband, Don Ellison, of Takoma Park, Md.; three granddaughters, Amanda Councill Dickerson and husband, Hill, of Wake Forest, Grace and Mollie Ellison of Takoma Park, Md.; and three grandsons, Cody Dee Councill of Raleigh, Dalton Ward of Blowing Rock and Quentin Lewis of Boone; one great-granddaughter, Ava Grace Dickerson of Wake Forest; his sister, Grace Councill Atkinson of Durham; one step-daughter, Robin Ventress of Salt Lake City, Utah; step-son, Alan Ventress and wife, Rosemary, of Canton, Ga; and two step-granddaughters, Hadyn and Caroline Ventress, both of Canton, Ga..
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Tracy and Grace McNinch Councill.
Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. George Naff. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Watauga Medical Center, P.O. Box 2600, Boone; to Boone United Methodist Church Building Fund, 471 New Market Blvd., Boone; or to ASU Office of Gift Planning for the Grace McNinch Councill Scholarship for Teacher Education, ASU P.O. Barry J. Sickler
Mr. Barry J. Sickler, 60, of 1289 Old John's River Road, Blowing Rock, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at his home.
He was born Feb. 2, 1948, in Ohio, and moved to Orlando, Fla. in 1958 with his family.
Mr. Sickler attended William R. Boone High School and graduated in 1966.
He attended and graduated from University of Central Florida after serving his country in Vietnam.
He joined the Navy and trained as a Medic and was sent to Vietnam during the 1968-1969 invasion.
He was exposed to Agent Orange and died of the effects.
Barry loved this country and ultimately died for his country.
Mr. Sickler was a kind, loving, considerate, generous person that will be dearly missed by this family and many friends. He never lost his sense of humor and was gracious to the end.
Survivors include his wife, Diann Craig of Blowing Rock; Diann's two sons and their wives; three grandchildren; his faithful dogs; and his brother, Greg Sickler, who is doing missionary work in the Philippines. He is also survived by his many friends scattered throughout the country.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date for his family and friends.

Rufus Arnold Earp
Mr. Rufus Arnold Earp, 74, of Woodside Terrace, Granite Falls, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 22, 1934 in Watauga County to the late Lee and Ethel Greer Earp.
Mr. Earp retired from Sasha Union in Valdese, and was of the Baptist faith. He also was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jean Hollars Earp; two sons, Steven Earp of Hudson and Scott Earp of Oak Island, N.C.; one daughter, Ms. Sheila Ann Earp of North Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Ernest Earp of Vilas, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Lewis “Violet” Moore of Lenoir and Ms. Ivalean Stewart of Vilas, N.C.; one granddaughter, Melissa Earp of Hudson; and two grandsons, Benjamin Earp of Hudson and Michael Earp of Queensbury, N.Y.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Earp.
Graveside services were held Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Danner Cemetery in Vilas, N.C. conducted by the Rev. Burl Greer and the Rev. Melvin Hodges.

Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Matheson
Ms. Jacqueline "Jackie" Matheson, 79, of 1251 Old Hampton Road, Boone, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at her home.
She was born Jan. 16, 1929 in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late John William and Betty Neal Triplett Matheson.
Ms. Matheson was a retired manager in the gift department at Bobbit’s College Pharmacy.
Survivors include one brother, John "Mack" Matheson and wife, Margaret, of Boone; one cousin, Billy B. Triplett and wife, Gina, of Boone; and two nephews, Mark Matheson and Mike Matheson, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Thursday morning, June 5, 2008, at 11:00 o'clock, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be the Rev. Gordon Noble.

Miss Octavia Miller, infant daughter of Michael Miller and Kayla Ruppard, of 310 High Knolls Lane, Deep Gap, died Thursday, May 29, 2008.
In addition to parents, Miss Miller is survived by her maternal grandmother, Kimberly Lander and husband, William, of Lenoir; her maternal grandfather, Steve Ruppard of Zionville; her paternal grandparents, Jennifer Phillips of Mountain City, and Mike Wilson of Boone, Lorine Miller of Boone, and Charles Miller of Boone; a paternal great-grandfather, John Craig of Blowing Rock; her maternal great-grandparents, Thea Grin of Pontiac, Ill., and Russell Lee Miller of Fairbury, Ill.; and her maternal great-great-grandfather, Lester Rients of Streator, Ill.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 3, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Nathan Caparolie. Burial will follow in the White Rock Cemetery.

Frances Zelma Hicks Presnell
Mrs. Frances Zelma Hicks Presnell, 75, of 3652 Hickory-Lincolnton Highway, Newton, formerly of Boone, died Friday morning, May 30, 2008, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
She was born Feb. 12, 1933 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Gold Gilbert and Sara Ann Harmon Hicks.
Mrs. Presnell was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Roseanne Hicks and husband, Frank, of Vale, and Shirley Hicks and husband, Mack, of Newton; four sons, Boyd Presnell, Steve Presnell and wife, Joyce, Jimmy Presnell, and Dewey Presnell, all of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Glenda Presnell of Valdese; two sisters, Hattie Presnell and husband, Bennie, of Banner Elk, and Nancy Austin and husband, Gary, of Hudson; and four brothers, Charlie Hicks and wife, Alice, of Banner Elk, Wyllis Hicks, Jerry Hicks and wife, Nancy, and Orville Hicks and wife, Sylvia, all of Boone. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Jerome Presnell; one daughter, Kathy Presnell; one son, Daved Presnell; her great-great-grandson, Seth Bowen; one sister, Mary Presnell; and three brothers, Bobby, John, and Hassell Hicks.
Services will be conducted Monday morning, June 2, 2008, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Harvey Presnell. Burial will follow in the Yates Cemetery in Matney.
