Furman shocks ASU

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Appalachian State issued four walks in the bottom of the 10th inning to set up a walk-off grand slam by Furman’s Bobby Hubbard that handed Appalachian a devastating 10-8 loss in the first round of the 2008 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Riley Park.

Hall inducts Class of 2008
The Boone Optimist Club announced Monday that April Cook Guinchard, Bill Mauldin, Jim Deal, and Bob Harmon were inducted into the Watauga Sports Hall of Fame.

Bucs’ 2006 No. 1 pick wins
ROME, Ga. — Hickory starting pitcher Brad Lincoln, making his first start of 2008 after missing all of 2007 recovering from Tommy John surgery, was impressive in leading Hickory to its sixth straight win — a 4-2 triumph over the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium.

ASU puts three on all-league squad
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State’s baseball team placed three players on the Southern Conference coaches’ all-conference teams, the league announced on Monday.

Williams sets school record
ATLANTA, Ga. — In the final meet of the regular season, Brittani Williams set a school record and teammate Vonteena Knotts qualified for the NCAA East Regional meet in the triple jump.

ASU sending seven to East Regional
ATLANTA, Ga. — With one meet remaining before the NCAA East Regional, the Appalachian State men's track and field team turned in a strong performance and will send seven athletes to compete in eight events.

Around the area: Storm under-16 girls have good year
The Watauga Storm under-16 girls’ basketball team closed out its season by taking fifth place in the YBOA state tournament. The Storm had taken fifth plce in the YBOA West Regional before that, and second in the Outback Invitaitonal.

Commentary: Pioneers back on the baseball map

WELCOME — For at least one season, Watauga’s baseball program is back. At least for one season.

HCSA under 12s win Western title
Having outscored opponents a combined 77-14 since August, High Country Soccer’s under-12 girls travel team can now add “champions” to their long list of accomplishments by winning the Western North Carolina Championship.

ASU clips Terriers, avoid play-in game
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State needed to win just as many games last weekend as Western Carolina did to reach the top six of the Southern Conference and, therefore, avoid a play-in game in the SoCon Baseball Tournament.
