News update: Speaker of the House visits Boone
One of the state’s most prominent political leaders visited the district Friday to hear local concerns.
N.C. Speaker of the House Joe Hackney (D-Orange) and N.C. Rep. Cullie Tarleton (D-Watauga) hosted an informal “listening tour” to meet with the public, local leaders and elected officials at the Watauga County Administrative Building in Boone. See Monday's Watauga Democrat for complete coverage.

Company’s summer season
For its season premiere, the Blowing Rock Stage Company (BRSC) is blowing open a time capsule guaranteed to send musical shrapnel from the impassioned titular decade straight into the hearts of audience members.
Memorial Day events
• Appalachian State University will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26, at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, located on the west side of the Dougherty Administration Building on the ASU campus. Retired Navy captain Michael J. O’Connor will serve as guest speaker at the event. Activities will include a flag-raising ceremony and a brief program. Following the ceremony there will be a continental breakfast inside the administration building.
• The Boone chapter of the American Legion will be holding a ceremony for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, at the American Legion Post located on Bear Trail Road, near Junaluska Park in downtown Boone. The ceremony starts at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.
• The Blowing Rock American Legion will hold a ceremony at Blowing Rock Memorial Park on Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m.

April 28 — Aaron Gregory Bennett, 20, of 271 Clay Hodges Road, Boone, was served with a warrant for arrest on charges of assault and battery.

Council accessorizes housing policy
In other matters, the Boone Town Council was essentially forced to change its policy on accessory housing, which was originally adopted in hope of providing more affordable housing options for the community.

Friends grieve following stabbing
The community is rallying around Watauga High students and the victim’s family in the wake of the post prom murder last weekend. Benjamin Seth Pickett, 19, of Todd was fatally stabbed at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday at a party on Navajo Trail in Boone.

Town Council nixes Elk Motel sewer plan
The Elk could be back on the endangered species list. Following closed session at last Thursday’s regular Boone Town Council meeting, council members unanimously agreed to rescind a contract to help furnish sewer for the Elk Motel, placing the entire project cost on owner Floyd “Dipper” Garrison.

Watauga man fatally stabbed at party
A post-prom party turned deadly early Sunday morning. Officers with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Navajo Trail in Boone after receiving a report of a stabbing.
Diane Hamby concedes narrow primary
Roy Carter’s lead narrowed in the wake of provisional vote counts in 12 counties, but after provisional ballots were counted, he still clung to a narrow victory for a Democratic congressional nomination.
Boone mayor questions ABC expert

ASU students OK after earthquake in China
Two groups of travelers from Appalachian State University are in China but were not harmed in Monday’s powerful earthquake, ASU’s Office of International Education and Development reported. The earthquake ranked a 7.9 on the Richter scale and primarily affected the Sichuan Province, a mountainous region in the western part of the country.

Watauga County is taking a closer look at electronic billboards in the wake of citizen complaints. The agenda for Tuesday’s board of commissioners meeting includes discussion of a possible moratorium on electronic signs and electronic billboards.

A long-discussed expansion at Hawksnest Ski Resort in Seven Devils was approved by the Seven Devils Board of Adjustment Tuesday, paving the way for an expansion of a snow tubing operation but leaving the future of a long-dormant golf course in doubt.
