There was a reason why Watauga’s football team went to the state 4-A semifinals the last two years — the Pioneers had some pretty good players.

Appalachian State Eliminates Furman, 2-1
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Appalachian State managed just two runs on two hits, but the Mountaineers held the Furman offense at bay in a 2-1 victory in game six of the 2008 Southern Conference Softball Championship at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

Duo earns honors

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Appalachian State catcher Katie Boyd and second baseman Brittany Gaston were named All-Southern Conference Wednesday onboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor.

Pioneers take on Garinger
For a while, Watauga baseball coach Pete Hardee did not know which team from the Queen City Conference the Pioneers would play in the first round of the playoffs.


Pioneers trip Ashebrook
The Watauga men’s tennis team hosted the first round of the duals team state playoffs and defeated the Ashbrook Greenwave 8-1 Tuesday at the Carroll Complex.

Watauga wins big award

CHAPEL HILL — Watauga High School has won the inaugural “Exemplary School Award” given to recognize the top overall school in the state determined by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, the North Carolina Coaches Association and the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association.

Mance to be honored
Appalachian State’s head wrestling coach Paul Mance will be honored by the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his lifetime service to the wrestling. Joining the Class of 2008, Mance will be permanently recognized at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Okla.

Watauga goes 5-0 in tournament
The Watauga Storm 18-under team went 5-0, winning three pool play games and two bracket games in the YBOA Waynesville Shootout.

Dunnigan, Church lead rally past Cavs
GRANITE FALLS — Trey Dunnigan had hit seven home runs before the one he hit out of M.S. Deal Stadium in Watauga’s 4-3 victory over East Burke in the semifinals of the Northwestern 4-A Conference Tournament.
