Memorial fund established for accident victim
A memorial fund has been established to assist the family of Boone woman killed in a car accident April 18 on U.S. 321.
Watauga sheriff’s reports:
April 11 — Larceny was reported at a residence on the 700 block of Clint Norris Road in Boone.

April 2 —Larceny by shoplifting was reported at 8:27 a.m. at a business on the 100 block of Old East King Street. A can of beer was reported stolen.
Clinton stumps for wife at ASU
Thousands of people, most of them Appalachian State University students, waited more than two hours to hear former Pres. Bill Clinton speak at Varsity Gym on the college campus in Boone Tuesday in support of his wife Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

April 30, 2008 Cat causes power outage
A cat looking for a warm place to sleep caused more than 4,700 people to lose power Tuesday night. Renee Whitener, director of public relations for Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, said the cat crawled into the Boone substation. The cat caused a shortage, which burned some of the wires.
Power was out for approximately 45 minutes while crews worked to repair the damage. Power was restored at 10:58 p.m. The cat was killed by the contact with the wires. Whitener said that although the technology is in place to alert BREMCO when electric service is interrupted, members are urged to call the PowerLine at (800) 448-2383 to report outages. —Melanie Davis, staff writer
