ASU eighth in golf finals

HOLLYWOOD, S.C. — Appalachian State’s women’s golf team finished its second day of the Southern Conference Championship in eighth place, 64 strokes behind the tournament leader Furman. The tournament is being held at the Links at Stono Ferry.

Pioneers pound S. Caldwell
Even when Watauga boys tennis coach Scott Taylor moved people around in his lineup, and even when he let others not normally in the Pioneers’ top six get to play doubles, South Caldwell was no match for Watauga.

Starting pitchers improving
It was no secret that the expectations for Appalachian State’s baseball team were high this season. Coming off a winning season in 2007 for the first time in a long time, the Mountaineers felt they had everything they needed to reach the top half of the Southern Conference.

The Pioneer tennis team wasted no time on their home courts against the East Burke Cavaliers on Thursday, winning all nine matches at the Carroll Complex.

ASHEVILLE — Watauga’s defense has emerged as one of the stingiest in the Northwestern 4-A Conference. However, the Pioneers have struggled against the defenses of the two top teams in the NWC.

Vincent named new ASU coach
Appalachian State has named Darcie Vincent as its new women’s basketball head coach, ASU athletic director Charlie Cobb announced Friday.
