Pioneers settle
for 0-0 with MHS
From staff reports
MARION — Watauga, after two regulation and two overtime periods, left McDowell the same way it arrived.
The Pioneers had to settle for a 0-0 tie with the Titans, who remained in second place in the Northwestern 4-A Conference.
Watauga coach Doug Kidd was looking to make a move up the NWC standings. However, the Pioneers got off to a slow start. Though they had some scoring chances, the Pioneers could not covert them into any goals.

“It doesn’t help us in the standings at all,” Kidd said. “They have a loss and a tie and we have two losses and a tie. If we want to up our standing, we’re going to have to beat Reynolds there, which is possible, but they’re a very good team.”
Several of the Pioneers, following the game, looked like they were dealing with a loss instead of a tie. Kidd was encouraged by that simply because it showed that the players were not satisfied with merely getting a tie out of the game.
“I love the fact that we are disappointed, because we’re competitive and we don’t like to lose.”
Kidd did not like how the first 30 minutes of the game went, but liked the final 10 minutes of the first half.
“For some reason, we picked it up in the last 10 minutes and had a flurry of chances,” he said.
