Boyd repeats honor
From staff reports
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State freshman softball player Katie Boyd earned her second SoCon player of the week honor after her impressive performances against ETSU and Furman this week.
Boyd and her teammates will host Gardner-Webb for a Tuesday doubleheader at the ASU Softball Stadium starting at 3 p.m.
Boyd batted .643 (9-for-14) last week with five extra-base hits and seven RBIs as the Mountaineers took two of three games from Furman in a weekend SoCon series. The freshman backstop from Walkertown tied the ASU single-season home run record against East Tennessee State on Wednesday and set a new mark (eight) against Furman on Saturday afternoon.
In all, she tallied a pair of home runs, two doubles and a triple in four games. Boyd currently leads the league in batting average (.444), slugging percentage (.833) and on-base percentage (.541).
The Mountaineers put their 7-24 (5-5 SoCon) mark on the line against Gardner Webb (16-28, 3-13 A-Sun) on Tuesday afternoon. Bulldog batters are hitting .250 on the season and are led by Jessi Williams’ .305 average. The pitching staff is anchored by Taryn Beck’s 2.84 ERA and 7-13 record.

Appalachian State signed four players — Kelly Allaband, Kelsey Dorset, Lauren Kleoppinger and Bridgette Street — Monday afternoon.
“We are very much looking to having this strong incoming class to add to our program,” Mountaineers coach Brandi Alexander said. “All four have the potential to come in and have a significant impact for our fall season. Lauren and Bridgette will add to our experienced backfield and we will be looking to Kelly and Kelsey to help with our offensive efforts.”
