Officials seize 77 dogs from home
Seventy-seven dogs and three dead puppies were seized during a search warrant executed at a home located at 10430 N.C. 194 north near Todd Thursday evening.

Boone Saloon damaged by fire

A fire caused the evacuation of a downtown restaurant and bar Thursday night. A fire in the rear of the Boone Saloon was reported just after 11:30 p.m.


Jury selection complete for murder trial
Jury selection is complete and the presenation of evidence is set to begin in the capital murder trial of Neil Matthew Sargeant, 26.

Sweatshop free

Appalachian State University students gather to protest in the B.B. Dougherty Administration Building on the ASU campus Wednesday. The students are protesting the university’s purchasing of Appalachian apparel from companies that may utilize sweatshops. According to multiple press releases, numerous students are occupying the administration building in an attempt to get arrested by authorities. The students hope to persuade university administration to participate in the Designated Suppliers Program to ensure university apparel is not manufactured in sweatshops. Photos by Andrea Marsh

Jury selection is continuing through Wednesday in the superior court trial of Neil Matthew Sargeant, 26. Sargeant has been in custody since November of 2005.

A walk down N.C. 194 for a 32-year-old man has turned into charges.

Increased traffic enforcement on N.C. 105
A number of citizen complaints, traffic accidents and officer observance of traffic violations has led to the announcement of increased enforcement on N.C. 105 by the Boone Police Department. The announcement was made Thursday morning by Capt. Curtis Main. Signage notifying citizens of the increased enforcement will go up along N.C. 105 on April 14 and will remain for two weeks. “The Boone Police Department takes our responsibility for traffic safety very seriously and hopes that all drivers will assist us in making our streets and highways safe,” Main said. — Melanie Davis, staff writer

From hoops to soup


Appalachian State basketball star Donte Minter passes soup to guests during Tuesday afternoon's Celebrity Serve event at Makoto Seafood and Steakhouse of Japan in Boone. Minter and other local celebrities waited on guests and donated their tips toward a number of worthy local causes. Celebrity Serve continues Tuesday evening at area restaurants.

Jury selection is continuing through Wednesday in the Superior Court trial of Neil Matthew Sargeant, 26, charged in the murder of a 19-year-old in 2005.

A joint operation between investigators with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office and the Davidson County Sheriff's Office has led to the arrest of Frankie Dale Glenn, 47, of Lexington.

Jury selection begins in murder case
Jury selection began Monday for the trial of Neil Matthew Sargeant, 26, in the 2005 murder of Stephen William Harrington. Sargeant faces the death penalty on the charge of first-degree murder. He is also charged with first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and burning of personal property.
