The Obama for America Boone campaign office was filled to capacity at an open house Thursday evening, with some supporters standing outside despite the spring drizzle.

The local office for Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is one of 13 in North Carolina, which is projected as a key state for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The open house kicked off with Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson voicing her support for Obama, followed by an address by campaign field director Ben Logan.

Logan will serve as the director for Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Surry counties.

Appalachian State University student Andy Ball will serve as the field director for the university.

Logan outlined the plans and volunteer needs of the office, including office managers to run the operations of the office from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day and Obama ambassadors to speak on behalf of the campaign at schools, churches and other organizations.

The office will ask volunteers to donate office supplies and housing to volunteers from out of the area and recruit block and precinct captains, as well as volunteers to help register voters.

ASU student Sarah Moncelle is serving as the volunteer coordinator.

Those interested can call (919) 915-0636 for more information.

Ball said the office may recruit an additional field director to assist Logan with the surrounding areas.
Community members and students alike were present to show their support and sign up for volunteer opportunities.

Boone resident Bricca Sweet is looking forward to participating in the campaign, calling it “particularly exciting due to Obama’s inspiring leadership.”

ASU senior Allison Cate volunteered in the office in the days leading up to the open house and is excited about the prospect of contributing to the effort. “This is the first election I get to vote and I hope to be able to help the Obama campaign,” she said.

There is no word as yet on any plans to open office for Democratic hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton or Republican pick Sen. John McCain.

The office is located at 420 West King Street Suite B, near the intersection of Straight Street. For more information call (828) 406-2408.
