Evans earns honor

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Former Watauga state girls’ tennis champion Anna Lee Evans was named the Southern Conference’s co-women’s tennis player of the month.


Evans, who won a state 4-A singles championship for Watauga during her senior season, is 8-0 in the SoCon. She has won 15 in a row and is currently 19-2.

She beat Lindsay King of Appalachian State 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles Sunday at Appalachian State’s courts.


Evans, a sophomore, is 1-1 at No. 3 singles, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and 11-0 at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, she’s 1-0.


She’s also teams with Chelsea Alberts, and they have won 12 straight matches, including an 8-4 win over Appalachian State’s Amanda Cash and King at No. 3 doubles. College of Charleston is 20-2 overall, 7-1 in the SoCon.

For the Month of March, Evans posted an 11-1 record and went 5-0 in the conference.


Track and field
ASHEVILLE — Both Watauga’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams finished third in the Blue Ridge Classic held at A.C. Reynolds Saturday.

Watauga’s girls finished with 73 points, three more than fourth place Asheville. T.C. Roberson won with 138 points and was followed by A.C. Reynolds with 120.

Watauga’s boys finished with 77 points. Roberson won with 107.5 points, followed by Asheville, which had 107.

In the girls’ meet, Watauga got a strong performance from both Emily and Rebekah Pineda. Emily won the discus with a toss of 106-feet, 8-inches. Rebekah Pineda was third with a toss of 97-11.


Watauga’s Taylor Cook won the pole vault with a distance of 10-6, while Kristina Tracy was fifth with an 8-6. Tracy was also fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-5.

The Pioneers got a second-place finish from Kasey Jones, in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.35.


In distance running, Watauga was third in the mile relay with a time of 4:28.67 and fourth in the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 10:52.83. Watauga’s 400 relay was sixth with a 57.89.


Individually, Laiken Williams was fifth in the 400-meter dash and Emily Pineda was sixth in the 800-meter run.

In the boys’ meet, Matt Salzano won the shot put with a toss of 51-0 feet. Gabe Romano was second in the discus with a throw of 127-4 and Jordan Pineda was seventh with a 119-5.

Chris Symonovicz won the high jump with a leap of 5-10.

Savis Kostis was second in the pole vault at 10-0 and Boyd was third in the event. Boyd, who also finished seventh in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, also vaulted 10-0, but needed more vaults to attain the height.

Both of Watauga’s 3,200 and 1,600-meter relay teams finished second. The Pioneers’ 800-meter team and their 400-meter team was seventh.

In distance running, Will Barbour was fourth and Dylan Carp eighth in the 3,200-meter run. Jay Weaver placed fourth and Jordan Trivette was fifth in the 800-meter run, whole Justin Martin was eighth in the 1,600-meter run.

WHS baseball
ASHEVILLE— Watauga’s baseball team beat T.C. Roberson 7-5 Saturday.

Watauga took a 5-1 lead by the top of the fourth inning and never let Roberson take any lead, though the Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Watauga’s Trey Dunnigan belted a key two-run home run in the sixth inning that sealed the victory. Watauga pitcher Tyler Moore, who will likely pitch Tuesday against South Caldwell, got the win.

Cal Hardee had two of Watauga’s eight hits.
