Pioneers bash Ashe
WEST JEFFERSON — Watauga shook off a 14-2 loss to Alexander Central Tuesday by blasting Ashe County 9-0 Wednesday.

Pioneers cruise to 6-0 win
Watauga’s girls’ soccer coach Doug Kidd could be heard form the sideline yelling “push it” several times during the Pioneers’ Northwestern 4-A Conference game with Alexander Central Tuesday night at Jack Groce Stadium.

Tar Heels belt ASU, Cougars invade Friday
CARY — Appalachian State committed a season-high three errors in the first two innings and never recovered in a 7-0 loss Wednesday to No. 4 North Carolina at the USA Baseball Training Complex.

A record number of fans ordered 2008 Appalachian State football season tickets on Tuesday, the first day season-ticket orders could be placed with the ASU athletics ticket office, according to the school’s Web site.

Watauga’s winter sports produced two Northwestern 4-A Conference Players of the Year in wrestler Jacob Earp and swimmer William Rayner.

MORGANTON — During the annually frigid Freedom Invitational at Shuey Field, Watauga was able to hang tough against the perennial powerhouse Central Cabarrus, but could not overcome the No. 9-ranked Vikings and lost 4-1 Saturday.

The new 3-point rule probably won’t mean much to Davidson sharpshooter Stephen Curry or Appalachian State’s 3-point shooters Donald Sims and Ryan Abraham.

Citadel takes two from ASU
CHARLESTON, S.C. — The beginning of the Southern Conference season has been difficult for Appalachian State. The bad news is that things are going to get tougher before they get any easier.
