Appalachian State University head football coach Jerry Moore and associate director of athletics and “Voice of the Mountaineers,” David Jackson received High Country Rotary Outstanding Achievement Awards at a joint meeting of the Rotary Clubs of Avery County, Blowing Rock, Boone and Boone Sunrise last week.

Moore also received the Paul Harris Fellow designation indicating that a substantial contribution has been made to the Rotary Foundation in his honor.

Moore and the Mountaineers won an unprecedented third NCAA Division I FCS National Championship with a 49-21 victory over the University of Delaware on Dec. 14, 2007.

Moore, a three-time AFCA National Coach of the Year, has compiled a 167-70 record in 19 seasons at ASU making him the winningest coach in ASU and Southern Conference history. His overall record is 194-118-2 in 26 years as a head coach, including stints at North Texas and Texas Tech. Over the past three seasons, he has led ASU to a combined 39-6 record en route to three-consecutive SoCon and national titles.

In February, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named Jackson “North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year.” He will be honored, along with the rest of the NSSA’s state and national award winners, during the organization’s national convention, May 3-5 in Salisbury.

In addition to Jackson, CBS’s Jim Nantz will be honored as the National Sportscaster of the Year and the Boston Globe’s Bob Ryan will receive the National Sportswriter of the Year award.

A 2000 ASU graduate, Jackson is in his eighth year serving as the play-by-play announcer for Appalachian football, men’s basketball and baseball radio broadcasts. He is also the host of ASU’s Appalachian Football Weekly and Mountaineer Basketball with Houston Fancher television shows and oversees Appalachian’s marketing and ticket operations in his role as associate director.
