From staff reports

RALEIGH — Davidson is starting to show the rest of the college basketball world that having a 24-game winning streak is no fluke.

Fresh off a victory over Gonzaga in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, the Wildcats made it two straight by shocking No. 2 seeded Georgetown 74-70 at the RBC Center Sunday in Raleigh.

It’s the first time Davidson has won an NCAA tournament game since 1969 under then coach Lefty Dreisell.
The 2007-08 edition, under the direction of coach Bob McKillop, got 30 points from sharpshooting guard Stephen Curry, despite missing 10 of his first 12 shots. He scored 25 of them in the second half.

The Wildcats take on No. 3 seeded Wisconsin Friday in Detroit.

Jason Richards scored 20 points and helped keep the Wildcats (28-6) close when Curry was struggling.

Georgetown (28-6) led 46-29 in the second half and was shooting 71 percent from the field at the time.

However, the Hoyas turned the ball over 20 times and the Wildcats took full advantage.

Curry hit a 3-point shot and then fed Andrew Lovedale to pull the Wildcats to within 50-48 with 8:47 left in the game. Curry didn’t stop there, as he hit a shot in the lane and then another 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 65-60 lead with 2:56 left.

Curry, the son of former Charlotte Hornet Del Curry, had a 3-point shot blocked, but Lovedale was able to get the rebound and hit a layup, giving the Wildcats a 67-60 lead. From there, Curry was able to make key foul shots to keep the Hoyas from attempting a comeback.

Georgetown got 14 points from Jessie Sapp and 12 from Jonathan Wallace.

UNC 108, Arkansas 77
RALEIGH — North Carolina got 20 points from Wayne Ellington and rolled past Arkansas and into the Sweet 16.

The Tar Heels crushed Mount St. Mary’s 113-71 in the first round Friday night at the RBC Center. They’ll take on No. 4 seeded Washington State in the East Regional at Charlotte Thursday night.

Ty Lawson added 19 points and seven assists for the Tar Heels (34-2). North Carolina led 51-26 at halftime and never looked back at the Razorbacks (23-12). Arkansas never got closer than 21 points after the break.

Tyler Hansbrough finished with 17 points for the Tar Heels. Sonny Weems scored 19 for the Razorbacks.
