State agencies assist in locating a missing child
Multiple agencies worked together in the Junaluska area Thursday to find a missing child. The juvenile was reported missing at 10:50 a.m. to the Watauga County Sheriff's Office. Deputies and members of Watauga County Emergency Management Office responded to Sunny Chestnut Forest Road, near the town of Boone. A code red was activated, requesting assistance from two state agencies. A N.C. Highway Patrol helicopter responded to assist in the search, as well as the N.C. Search and Rescue K-9 unit. Watauga County Rescue Squad also responded. The child was found in the area at 12:18 p.m. Watauga Medics examined the juvenile and no injuries were reported. Authorities have not released the age of the child or any further details of where the child was located. —Melanie Davis, staff writer

March 6 — Jesus Felipe Alonzo, 26, of 34 Rabbit Ranch Road, Newland, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and no operator’s license.

Tree collapse at colony

A storm last Thursday evening put four work vehicles at Hebron Colony Ministries out of commission, blowing a tree on top of all four. Kent Garver, an agency staffer, said the ministry has so far been unable to move the large tree and is hoping for assistance from the community. The tree fell while the staff and residents were attending chapel and no one was hurt. Hebron Colony Ministries is a nonprofit organization serving men who are struggling with chemical dependency. Aisling Broadcasting LLC, parent company of a group of six local radio stations, including WATA, is undergoing receivership proceedings.

Town, ASU work on master plans
What’s better than a master plan? Two master plans, according to local officials. As timing would have it, both the town of Boone and Appalachian State University are developing respective master plans for future growth.

Feb. 29 — Christopher Robert Bartok, 35, of 6881 U.S. 221 South, Blowing Rock, was served with an order for arrest on a charge of failure to appear at a scheduled court date in Greensboro.

A new farmers’ market is blossoming in Boone.
Watauga Opportunities finds niche in medical supplies
Watauga Opportunities Inc. is hoping to expand opportunity as it explores a niche manufacturing market. The organization has joined with other regional rehabilitation centers to create and supply custom medical products, an emerging field in which specialization will help the manufacturer adapt to the changing economy.

Feb. 29 — A charge of possession of marijuana up to one half ounce was dismissed against Justin Christopher Quinn, 19, of 52 Bluff Cove Road, Weaverville, due to compliance with conditions previously set by the court.
