Elon cruises

past ASU netters

ELON — The Appalachian State women’s tennis team was unable to snap its Southern Conference losing skid, as the Mountaineers fell 6-1 to Elon Tuesday afternoon.


Appalachian dropped to 4-8 overall, 0-5 in the SoCon. Elon improved to 10-6, 2-2.

Appalachian State got off to a slow start by losing each of the three doubles matches.


At the No.1 doubles spot, the duo of Monica Tomas and Heather Prior and the Mountaineers’ No. 2 team of Anja Gugger and Caroline Mauch lost 8-2. Capping off doubles play, the team of Amanda Cash and Lindsay King lost 8-3.

In singles, freshman Elizabeth Holland continued her solid play at No. 5 singles by winning 6-1, 6-3. Holland was the only Mountaineer victorious in singles action.


At the No.1 singles, Gugger fell 6-1, 6-1, while Tomas lost 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.


Prior, Cash and King all struggled at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 spots respectively, each losing to their opponents in two sets.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday at Western Carolina.
