ASU nine splits
with Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Appalachian State split Saturday’s doubleheader at Jacksonville State, banging out a season-high 21 hits to take the opener, 15-6, before dropping the final game of a stretch of eight games in eight days, 5-4.

With the split, Appalachian took the three-game weekend series at Jacksonville State, two games to one, and moved to 10-8 on the season.


Third baseman Isaac Harrow led the offensive proficiency in game one with ASU’s top hitting performance of the season, a 5-for-6, five-RBI effort.

Appalachian State hosts Wake Forest in the Mountaineers’ first home game at Smith Stadium Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.


Softball
Appalachian State snapped a 12-game losing streak Sunday afternoon by sweeping Western Carolina 1-0 and 13-1.

Appalachian State’s Kayla Richardson pitched a gem for the Mountaineers in the first game, scattering four hits over a seven inning shutout. She struck out a career high nine batters and walked only two.

Appalachian scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Katie Boyd singled through the left side then stole second base in short order to start the inning. A single on the next at bat from Stephanie Long scored Boyd with no outs.

Indoor track and field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Applachian State senior Vonteena Knotts finished her indoor track and field career at by finishing 18th in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships Saturday at the University of Arkansas.


Brittany Reese of the University of Mississippi won the national title in the event, leaping 22-feet, 2 1/4 inches.

Knotts qualified for the NCAA Championships back on Dec. 1 at the ASU Invitational, where she jumped for a school record of 20 feet 10 1/2 inches.
