E.G. “Red” Lackey
Mr. E. G. “Red” Lackey passed away on Feb. 26, 2008 in Ormond Beach, Fla.
He was born in Hiddenite, N.C. on May 24, 1914. He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone after working his way through college making 25 cents a day cleaning offices. During the 1950s and 60s, Red was on the Board of Trustees at Appalachian for 17 years and was later honored by having the baseball field there named for him.
A week before Pearl Harbor he co-founded Pilot Freight Carriers in Winston-Salem, which came to be the sixth largest trucking company in the nation. He also served as a Forsyth County Commissioner in the 1960s.
During the 1970s Red founded and operated Lackey Industries in Brunswick County, providing trucking, warehousing, and manufacturing services in that area. His warehouse was located across the road from what was the DuPont plant at that time.
Red’s wife, Jane, passed away on Jan. 17, 2008 from Alzheimer’s Disease, shortly after they had celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. I believe that he had been holding on in life so he could take care of her.
He was a colorful man with friends all over the state (and country), and was a lifelong “Yellow Dog Democrat”. In fact, at the time of his death he was actively planning to attend the national Democratic Convention in Denver this summer, hoping to be the oldest delegate ever to do so.
He was gearing up for a fight there, given the uncertain status of Florida’s delegates.
Red never did back down from a fight when he felt he was defending what was right.
Red and Jane have requested that donations be made to the Jane Logan Lackey Endowments at Appalachian State University.
The contact for that is: The Jane Logan Lackey Endowments, c/o Patricia L. Wilson, ASU Box 32064, Boone, NC 28608-2064.
