Red Lackey passes away
E.G. “Red” Lackey, the namesake of Red Lackey Field, died Feb. 26.

Lackey was born in Hiddenite on May 24, 1914. He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone. During the 1950s and ’60s, Lackey was on the Board of Trustees at Appalachian for 17 years and was later honored by having the baseball field named for him.

The field has since been turned into a softball field and is now called ASU Softball Field.


Blue Ridge Wrestling Club to begin
The Blue Ridge Wrestling Club will be open from March 10-April 24 for youth in kindergarten through sixth grade who want to learn how to wrestle. The sessions are from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Watauga High School wrestling room.

The fee is $25, which includes a T-shirt. For more information, contact Lucas Scharmer at (828) 963-2379.
