Pioneers hold off No. 1-seeded Cavaliers

ICARD — Generally speaking, wildcard prep basketball teams aren’t supposed to beat No. 1 seeds. Apparently, somebody forgot to tell Watauga.

App State clubs Camels
BUIES CREEK — It was a perfect night for Appalachian State’s wrestling team as the Mountaineers routed the Campbell 41-0. The Mountaineers used two pins, a tech fall, three major decisions and four decision victories to win the match and closes the regular season at 14-7 on the season. Campbell falls to 2-22-1 on the season. Read more.

ASU pounds Deacs
WINSTON-SALEM — Appalachian State scored six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back Wednesday en route to an impressive 18-8 win at Wake Forest. Read more.

DAVIDSON — Maybe Davidson doesn’t need Stephen Curry to score his season average to win games. Read more.

Changes in WHS events
The bad weather this week has forced some changes in the Watauga girs’ soccer schedule. The Pioneers had two games this week affected by the weather. Watauga’s season-opener against East Forsyth was reschedued for Friday night. Their game with R.J. Reynolds has been cancelled. The result of other events being postponed was unknown at press time.


Newman's Corner

Left field at Watauga High School’s field was renamed Newman’s Corner in honor of Drew Newell, who was killed in an auto accident in November. Newell, whose nickname was “Newman,” played left field for Watauga. The dedication took place Monday during Watauga High School’s baseball team’s season opener. Photo by Rob Moore

Stanley Hodge was not supposed to end up with the basketball at the end of Appalachian State’s BracketBusters game with Niagara Saturday. Instead, with 4.2 seconds left in the game and with Appalachian State up by two, Niagara tried to get the ball to Charron Fisher, the leading scorer in the nation. To read more, please click here. Oak Hill Academy, which is one of the top high school basketball programs in the nation on a consistent basis, and undefeated Patterson Prep School, the No. 1 ranked postgraduate school in the country, will play in the Echota Mountain Madness Classic at the Holmes Center Monday night. Read more.
