News update: Man dies from injuries from Tuesday accident

A Butler, Tenn., man has died following a Tuesday night crash. Kevin Dewight Dugger, 30, of 379 Cowtown Road, was airlifted to Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center after colliding with a vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 421 and Tater Hill Road. Dugger later died of his injuries. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol report, two witnesses said Dugger’s 1990 Toyota was traveling with its headlights off when he struck the vehicle of Christopher Dennis Perry of 496 Camp Joy Road in Zionville. Perry was attempting to turn left onto Tater Hill Road at 5:22 p.m. Tuesday when the crash occurred. Perry suffered possible injury, but was not transported. No charges have been filed, and the case is under review by the District Attorney's Office. — By Scott Nicholson, staff writer

A tip to the Watauga County Crime Stoppers led to a search warrant of a residence on 289 Rocky Creek Road in Boone last Friday. Officers discovered more than seven pounds of marijuana, scales for weighing, assorted paraphernalia and $590 in cash. Read more.

Drew's corner

Members of the Newell family and supporters gather near left field at Watauga High’s baseball field on Monday to dedicate the area in memory of WHS alumnus and former Pioneer left fielder Drew Newell. The area will be dubbed “Newman’s Corner” — Drew’s nickname. Drew died in November following an auto collision on N.C. 105 in Boone.

Boone Town Council amends ordinance to allow new homeless shelter

A new home for the Hospitality House homeless shelter became all the more likely Thursday, after a vote by the Boone Town Council. Read more.

Sheriff's Office snags marijuana cache

A Friday search of a local residence led to the discovery of seven pounds of marijuana in an alleged processing operation. The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Group executed a search warrant at 289 Rocky Creek Road in Boone, where the marijuana was seized. The drugs had an estimated street value of $28,000. Also seized in the raid were $590 in cash, weigh scales and assorted paraphernalia. Three people are suspects in the crime, but no charges have been filed as of yet. The investigation is continuing and charges may be forthcoming. Holy hypothermia, Batman!

More than 200 Appalachian State University students, faculty, staff members and local residents jumped in the Duck Pond on campus Thursday afternoon at the 2008 Polar Plunge. The event raised money for Watauga Special Olympics, while lowering body temperatures a bit. And no plunge would be complete without an array of funky costumes. Higher pump prices don't repel travelers

Despite concerns over the economy and rising gas prices, the area’s visitor numbers continue to grow. Boone had a record month of January based on occupancy tax collections, though the increase could have come from higher room rates in addition to increased occupancy. Read more.

Fugitive arrested in 2005 sex-assault case
A Boone man was arrested nearly three years after being suspected of statutory rape and sex offense. The reported assault on a 14-year-old female occurred on May 11, 2005, and Francisco Javier Martinez-Garcia had been charged in the incident. Read more.

A Boone man has filed to oppose Democratic incumbent Cullie Tarleton for the 93rd District N.C. House of Representatives seat. Read more.
