BUIES CREEK — It was a perfect night for Appalachian State’s wrestling team as the Mountaineers routed the Campbell 41-0. The Mountaineers used two pins, a tech fall, three major decisions and four decision victories to win the match and closes the regular season at 14-7 on the season. Campbell falls to 2-22-1 on the season.


Appalachian State’s 125-pound Frank Celorrio opened the match with a 8-6 victory over C.J. Gittens. At 133-pounds, Terreyl Williams captured a tech fall victory, 22-7 over R.J. Mazzatta to extend Appalachian State’s lead to 8-0. Marcus Cox notched a major decision win over Campbell’s top grappler, Kelin Bidelspach, 24-10, at 141 pounds.


No. 13 ranked Scott Ervin improved to 33-5 on the season with a pin victory over Bob Matthews at 149-pounds in only 58 seconds. Eddie Hutchinson needed 2:02 to pin Jake Fose at 157-pounds, moving the score to 24-0. Tommy Hutchinson used the riding time point to beat Chris Mazzatta, 1-0 in the 165-pound bout. The victory was the narrowest of the night.


Neal Martin notched a 10-8 victory over Matt Hawksworth at 174-pounds to extend ASU’s lead to 31-0. At 184-pounds, Austin Trotman notched a 13-1 major decision victory over Kyle Higgins.


At 197-pounds, Dylan Temple beat Parker Burns 6-3 to put ASU up 38-0. In the final bout of the regular season, heavyweight Jared Campbell took a slim 2-0 victory over Rob Yonder, rounding out the 41-0 ASU victory.

Gaddy honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. —Appalachian men’s track and field athlete Joel Gaddy was named this week’s track athlete of the week announced the Southern Conference Tuesday afternoon.

This is Gaddy’s first award for the 2008 season, and Appalachian’s seventh.


The senior competes in both the long jump and triple jump for the Mountaineers and has posted solid performances throughout the entire indoor season.

His most impressive showing came over the weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge. At the meet, the Charlotte native took home first place in the triple jump, jumping 51-feet, 8 1/2 inches.
