From staff reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Appalachian State women's basketball team forced 28 turnovers and shot nearly 50 percent from the field in the second half to survive 17 lead changes and take a 74-69 decision at Wofford on Monday night.

Appalachian State center Brittany Mixon hit her only basket of the game with less than a minute to play.

Whitney Tossie inbounded the ball to Mixon, who sank a turnaround 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. The unexpected trey gave Appalachian State a 73-67 lead. Mixon pulled down six rebounds in 18 minutes as she battled foul trouble.

Wofford answered with a layup before Robin Colbert sank a free throw with 11 seconds remaining, to put the Mountaineers up 74-69. The five-point advantage would hold as Wofford's losing streak reached 14 games.

Appalachian State committed 15 first-half fouls and finished the game with 27, as Wofford made it to the line a total of 34 times in the game, compared to 26 for the visitors. The Mountaineers were led by Thomas’ nine boards as the team outrebounded Wofford 49-48.

GiGi Thomas and Tossie each had 14 points for the Mountaineers (8-19, 5-11). Francis Hernandez scored 10 points in the first half, and Sam Ramirez led the Mountaineers in scoring with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting.

Wofford (9-18, 2-14) hit just three of its first 10 free throws and knocked down 10-of-19 in the first half.
