Susie Pauline Bradley
Mrs. Susie Pauline Bradley of Hendersonville, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2008.
She was born in Macon County, a daughter of the late King and Allie Sanders Phillips.
Mrs. Bradley retired from Ecusta in Brevard before moving to Hendersonville in 1996. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hendersonville.
Survivors include two sons, Phillip Bradley of Seattle, Wash., James Bradley and his wife, Dawn, of Vilas, N.C.; five grandchildren; a brother, Ellis “Bud” Phillips of Bryson City; three sisters, Fannie Sanders, Mattie Norris, Ruby Hodgin, all of Franklin, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Horace J. Bradley; a brother, Barnard Phillips; and two sisters, Berthie Phillips and Margie Curtis.
Services were held at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary, with the Rev. Dr. William P. Campbell officiating.

Grace Robinson Eggers
Mrs. Grace Robinson Eggers, 88, of Jake Eggers Road, Vilas, died Monday evening, Feb. 18, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center. 
She was born April 1, 1919 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late George W. and Drilla Wilson Robinson.
Mrs. Eggers was a homemaker and wife of 35 years to the late Woodrow Eggers. She was a master quilter, enjoyed planting and harvesting her vegetable and flower gardens and was a lifelong member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Vilas, N.C.
Surviving are one son, Jerry Shockley and wife, Cathy, of Fairview, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Caroline Barnes Shockley of Vilas; a granddaughter, Melissa Shockley of Vilas; two grandsons, Marc Shockley of Fairview and David Shockley of Blowing Rock, two sisters, Helen Jean Senter of Morganton and Georgia Lewis of Asheville; one brother, Edward Robinson and wife, Ruth, of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Jane Robinson of Boone; two brothers-in-law, Joe Wilson of Vilas and Rev. Bobby Wallace of Bishopville, S.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Woodrow Eggers; three sisters, Hazel Wilson, Chloe Hathcock and Barbara Ann Wallace; her brother, Kent Robinson; and an infant brother, Blaine Robinson.
Services were conducted Thursday morning, Feb. 21, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Carl Johnson and the Rev. Bobby Wallace. Burial followed in the Lower Beaver Dam Cemetery, in Vilas.
The family received friends Wednesday evening at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel from 6 until 7:30 p.m. At other times, friends may call at the home of Caroline Barnes Shockley, 1830 Beaver Dam Road, Vilas, N.C.

Lester Hayes Hardin
Mr. Lester Hayes Hardin passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008.
He was born on July 8, 1928 in Robeson County, to Wilbur Nash and Mary Sealy Hardin.
One of ten boys, whose parents died when he was nine years old, Lester went to live in Raleigh at The Methodist Orphanage. The orphanage played a significant role in his life as he remained close to many of his “brothers and sisters”.
Mr. Hardin graduated from Appalachian State University where he played football. He was part of the football team under Coach E. C. Duggins. The group known today as “The Duggin’s Boys” is still recognized annually during the Appalachian State football season. These teammates remained friends for life and regularly held a reunion every year which was coordinated and founded by Lester. He was a true participant, fan, and supporter of ASU athletics. He seldom missed a football game – home or away. He will be sorely missed by his family and leagues of friends he developed over his lifetime.
Survivors include his wife Kate; his daughter, Lynne Hardin, and her son, Matt Lee, of Boone; his daughter, Betsy Norvell and her husband, Neal, and their son, Sam, of Davidson. He is also survived by his brothers, Romalus, Wilbur, Kenneth, and their families.
A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Boone United Methodist Church.

Dr. Clyde Newton McCall, 79, of Blowing Rock, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Gracie Townsend Mitchell
Mrs. Gracie Townsend Mitchell, 79, of Cajahs Mountain Road, Hudson, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, 2008 at home.
She was born in Watauga County, Oct. 8, 1928, a daughter of the late Jason and Essie Townsend.
Mrs. Mitchell was a homemaker and kept children in her home for years. She was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis Chester and husband, Steve, and Patricia Townsend and husband, Jesse; one son, Ronnie Mitchell and wife, Jackie, all of Hudson; six grandchildren, Hollie Burress and Daniel Chester, both of Granite Falls; April Kincaid, Brad Townsend, Phillip Chester and Ashley Mitchell, all of Hudson; three great-grandsons, Garrison and Kendel Burress of Granite Falls and Ashton Kincaid of Hudson; two sisters, Louise Townsend of Hickory, and Rosa Greene of Lenoir; three brothers, Earl Townsend and Grady Townsend of Lenoir, and Chester Townsend of Hickory.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Mitchell; three sisters, her twin sister, Macie Townsend, and Cora Townsend and Texie Townsend; and one brother, Claude Townsend.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Holy Communion Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Dr. Larry Campbell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon prior to the service from 1:30 until 3 o’clock at Holy Communion Lutheran Church.

Rev. Gordon Rawls
Rev. Gordon Rawls, 63, of 977 Buck Mountain Circle, West Jefferson, a former resident of Deep Gap, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born May 5, 1944 in Williamston, N.C., a son of the late Johnnie M. and Selma Ayers Rawls.
Rev. Rawls was the former pastor of Ross Baptist Church in Windsor, N.C., former pastor of Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap, former pastor Bethany Baptist Church in Mountain City, Tenn., and current pastor of Friendly Grove Baptist Church in West Jefferson.
Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Rawls Foley and husband, Robert, of Greensboro; three sons, John Rawls and wife, Kendra, of Deep Gap, Andrew Rawls and wife, Ronna, of Maiden, and Adam Rawls and wife, Wendy, of Hildebran; and one sister, Martha Rawls Lewis and husband, Dale, of Grantsboro. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Moon Rawls.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 11:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Lawrence, the Rev. Steve Leashomb, and the Rev. Harold Bennett. Burial will follow in Rutherwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday evening, from 6:00 until 8:30, at Friendly Grove Baptist Church in West Jefferson. The family also received friends Friday, from 11:00 until 1:30, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, prior to the service.

Allen J. Trivett
Mr. Allen J. Trivett, 83, 7850 Beech Mtn. Rd., Elk Park, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, from the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, following an extended illness. 
He was an Avery County, N.C. native and a son of the late Dudley and Winnie Naomi Norwood Trivett.
Mr. Trivett was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church and was a retired stone mason and farmer. He enjoyed his work as well as hunting, gardening and his time spent serving his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant who served in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Beulah Storie Trivett; one daughter, Katie Lee Trivett of the home; one granddaughter, Abigail Biggs of Johnson City; and one grandson, Nathan Biggs of Pinehurst, N.C. Several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded death by one daughter, Evelyn Trivett Biggs; four brothers, Carson, Clyde, Fin and Doug Trivett; and one sister, Ruth Trivett Rupard.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 in the Fall Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Warren, the Rev. Jacob Willis and the Rev. Chuck Morefield officiating. Interment will follow in North Hill Gap Trivett Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post No. 2166.

Gracie Harmon Trivett
Mrs. Gracie Harmon Trivett, 101, of the Clark Trivette Road, Sugar Grove, died Sunday evening, Feb. 17, 2008, at her home.
She was born Dec. 24, 1906 in Vilas to Oscar and LuCretia Miller Harmon.
Mrs. Trivett was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, homemaker and wife of 55 years to the late Clark Aaron Trivett.
Survivors include two daughters, Vada Cornett and husband, Beecher, of Vilas; and Georgia Lunceford of Sugar Grove; two sons, Ira Trivette and wife, Blanche, of Banner Elk and Teddy Ray Trivette and wife, Mildred, of Mt. Airy; 14 grandchildren, Mitzi Price, Tammy Jones, Jeffrey and Joyce Trivette, Michael and Allison Trivette, Angela Hicks, David, Kenneth, Tracy and Andy Lunceford, Liz Greer, Teddy Ray Manuel and Melba Hull; 31 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren; one brother, John Harmon of Live Oak, Fla.; a special niece, Shirley LaGow of Banner Elk; a special daughter-in-law, Maxine Trivette of Sugar Grove; and a special friend, Judy Harmon of Vilas.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Fred Trivette; a grandson, Anthony Trivette; five sisters, Iris Harmon, Frankie Harris, Burlie Harmon, Gertie Harmon and Rita Hicks; and by four brothers Eli, Monroe, Horace and Smithy Wayne Harmon.
Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Zion Hill Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. James Hagaman, the Rev. David Lunceford and the Rev. Andy Lunceford. Burial will follow in the Trivette Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Yates; two sons, Milton Yates and wife, Brenda, of Orlando, Fla. and Maurice Yates of Lenoir; four daughters, Linda Graybeal and husband, Wayne, of Boone, Jan Greene and husband, Mike, Laura Bolick and husband, Pumroy, and Becky McCall and husband, Brent, all of Lenoir; two brothers, Howard Love of Boone and Jim Love of Blowing Rock; three sisters, Doris Hodges of Tacoma, WA, Ruth Henson of Blowing Rock and Jean Perry of Millers Creek; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan Carr and the Rev. Bill Dyson officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Nicky Lee Edmisten-Andrews
Nicky Lee Edmisten-Andrews, 54, of Edmisten Road, Blowing Rock, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born June 29, 1953 in Parma, Ohio to Stephen Bogar and the late Mamie Louise Siffin Bogar.
Nicky was a member of Living Waters Christian Fellowship in Boone. She was the office coordinator at Swiss Mountain Village Resort in Blowing Rock.
Survivors include three daughters, Nadine Wells of Sumter, S.C., Brandi Miller of Boone and Merissa Edmisten of Wilkesboro; two grandsons, Codie Miller of Boone and Colton Key of Wilkesboro; and one granddaughter, Mackenzie Williams of Wilkesboro; her father, Stephen Bogar of Anaheim, Calif.; two sisters, Stephanie Ouijada of Moreno Valley, Calif. and Laura Siffin of Parma, Ohio; and her husband, Mitchell Andrews of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mamie Louise Siffin; and her former husband, Ray Edmisten.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Feb. 17, 2008, at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment followed at the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Blowing Rock.

Mr. Henry Perry “Pete” Carroll, 65, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at his residence.
He was born on March 7, 1942 in Watauga County, to the late Hiram Carroll and Beulah Hatley Carroll.
Mr. Carroll was a former machine operator with Progressive Furniture.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Barbara Bentley Carroll; three daughters, Debra Dunlap and husband, Johnny, of Hickory, Yvonne Vance and husband, Chris, of Drexel, and Leasha Christian and husband, Greg, of Drexel; two sons, Matthew Carroll and Cody Carroll, both of the home. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his beloved babies, Bear, Angel, Katie and Ashley; and one baby who preceded him in death, Gizmo, “his buddy”.
Services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. Officiating was the Rev. Dennis Pitts.

Mr. Allan “Al” Kaipo Kalua Jr., 52, of Hilo, Hawaii, passed away on Feb. 9, 2008.
He was born in Honolulu on Feb. 3, 1956.
Mr. Kalua was a self-employed mechanic, former member of the E KOA PUNA Motorcycle Club, and East Hawaii Racing Club.
Survivors include his grandmother, Julia Faustina Rezentes; his parents, Josephine Faustina Yamanaka and Dennis Nubuo Yamanaka, Allan Kaipo Kalua, Sr., and Anita; brothers and sisters, Lori Mahealani Lo and husband, Steven, of Honolulu, HI, Darryl Kamohoali’i Kalua and wife, Marlene, of Puna, HI, Renee Naomi Kuhau and husband, Randy, of Honolulu, HI, Mark Dennis Yamanaka and wife, Debborah, of Honolulu, HI; his former wife, Leona Viernes; sons, Jonathan Daniel Rodriguez of Austin Tex., Shawn Michael Peele and wife, Jennifer, of Boone, N.C., Keola Kaipo Kalua of Miami, Fla., Samuel Kamohoali’i Kalua of Maui, HI; and daughter, Maile Mahealani Kalua of Honolulu, HI; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Winston Roy ‘Jerry’ Lundquist
Mr. Winston Roy “Jerry” Lundquist, 68, of Sandestin, Fla., died Saturday morning, Feb. 9, 2008.
He was born in Wheaton, Ill., son of Roy and Evelyn Lundquist.
Mr. Lundquist graduated from Wheaton College and served as Assistant Dean of Students there for a while.
He and his wife, Marge, settled in Tallahassee, Fla., where he began the Home & Land Magazine Franchise that grew into a nationwide publishing enterprise.
He also began the Lifestyle “Tallahassee Magazine” which created a new level and sense of community.
Mr. Lundquist was very community-minded, serving as the Chair of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and the first Board Chairman of the James Madison Institute, a conservative “think tank”.
His greatest passion was his personal relationship with Christ both serving and giving to many organizations such as FCA, The Navigators, Campus Crusade For Christ, National and State Prayer Breakfasts for many years, and orchestrated the Billy Graham Crusade in Tallahassee.
He was also involved in the printing and distribution of In Touch Ministries Outreach.
He and his wife built the Lundquist-Hovda House, a Southern Scholarship Foundation Facility, that has housed more than 200 women to date at Florida State University.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marge; two sons, Brent of Birmingham, Ala., and Brian of Sandestin, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Carlyie Maye Lundquist of Boone, N.C.; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held March 16 at Bradfordville Road Baptist Church, Tallahassee, Fla.
Hazel Greene Payne
Mrs. Hazel Greene Payne, 96, of 1630 Mountain View Baptist Church Road, Deep Gap, passed away quietly at her home, surrounded by her loving family, Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008.
She was born Jan. 27, 1912 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Judson and Nealy Ann Greene.
Mrs. Payne was a life-long member of Mountain View Baptist and active in her community.
She was a loving wife, mother, and a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, V.C. Payne of Asheville, Glen R. Payne and wife, Mary Lou, of Buffalo, Kansas, and Vilas R. Payne and wife, Stena, of North Wilkesboro; three daughters, Katherine I. Payne of Hendersonville, Carol J. Politte of Fleetwood, and Janette P. Hollar and husband, Robert, of Hickory.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Payne; one son, McDonald Payne; one great-grandson, Ethan Hayes Hester; and one sister, Nettie G. Golds.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2008, at Mountain View Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn. Burial followed in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Shirley M. Rawls, 63, of 977 Buck Mountain Circle, West Jefferson, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008.
She was born July 8, 1944 in Baltimore, Md., a daughter of the late Elmer Leroy Moon, Sr. and Ruth Virginia Rader Moon. 
Mrs. Rawls was a retired secretary for Academics Affairs at Appalachian State University, and a member of Friendly Grove Baptist Church in Ashe County.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Gordon Rawls; one daughter, Sarah Rawls Foley and husband, Robert, of Greensboro; three sons, John Rawls and wife, Kendra, of Deep Gap, Andrew Rawls and wife, Ronna, of Maiden, and Adam Rawls and wife, Wendy, of Hildebran; two sisters, Virginia Azadi and husband, Massoud, of Ocean City, Md., and Carol Allsbrook and husband, Jimmy, of Williamston, N.C.; and one brother, Frank Moon and wife, Peggy, of Baltimore, Md. She is also survived by five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Elmer Leroy Moon, Sr. and Ruth Virginia Rader Moon; one sister, Phyllis Moon Jachelski; and one brother, Elmer Leroy "Roy" Moon, Jr.

Mrs. Judith Murray Sluder, 63, of Norman Road, Boone, died Thursday morning, Feb. 14, 2008 at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.
She was born August 3, 1944 in Asheville to James Reeves and Nell Rose Branton Murray.
Mrs. Sluder was a member of the Foscoe Christian Church. She was employed as a baker at Appalachian State University Food Services for 20 years and was an active volunteer at the university’s Campus Christian Fellowship.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Sluder; two daughters, Annette Sluder of Boone and Debra Sluder of Wilkesboro; one sister, Carolyn Williams and husband, Lowe, of Candler; and three brothers, David Murray and wife, Mary, of Summersville, S.C., Larry Murray and wife, Pat, of Yale, Va., and Roger Murray of Leicester.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2008, at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Minister Lance Hostetter. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Patricia Hall Thompson
Mrs. Patricia Hall Thompson, 46, of Bartow, Fla., lost her battle with cancer, Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was the daughter of William “Bill” and Mary Frances Hall of Bartow, Fla.
Mrs. Thompson lived in Bartow, Fla., until ten years ago when she moved to North Carolina.
She was a loving wife to Michael Thompson of Creston, N.C.; and wonderful mother of three children: daughters, Amanda Braswell and husband, Jamie; and Courtney Volberg and husband, Brian, all of Brooksville; and son, Bryant Clark IV and fiancé, Amber Wilkinson, of Jacksonville; step-sons, Dale Thompson of Creston; and Dane Thompson of Brooksville. She was a doting grandmother to Jacob and Greyson Volberg, Christopher and Zoe Wilkinson and LeAnna Paige Clark. She was adored by her brother, Spencer Hall of Jacksonville and Tally Hall of Bartow.
Services were held Friday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2008, at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow, Fla., with the Rev. Raggie Palmer officiating. Interment was at Gandy Cemetery in Connersville.
The family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
