Appalachian State’s Whitney Tossie and GiGi Thomas started the second half against UNC Greensboro on a mission.

The duo combined for 28 second-half points to push the Mountaineers past UNC Greensboro 58-53 Tuesday night.

Thomas shook off her cold first-half shooting to score the first four points of the second half for the Apps as the team regained a 29-28 lead. Thomas and Tossie accounted for the first 22 points of the second half, as the Mountaineers (7-19, 4-11) regained a 47-33 advantage.

Thomas ended the game with 12 points and five rebounds, while Tossie posted a season-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She dished out a pair of assists and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.


Early in the second, Tossie picked up four steals to add to her two first-half rips to pull within one of the career record of 341. With seven minutes to play, the senior picked her seventh of the game to tie the career record.


Sam Ramirez added 12 points, including 10 in the first half, for the Mountaineers. Robin Colbert added eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Gini Grimsley led UNC Greensboro (5-21, 3-12) with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting.

Appalachian knocked down 13-of-17 free throws including several down the stretch to ice the win, 58-53. The Mountaineers shot 34 percent from the floor compared to 36 percent for the Spartans.


Softball
CHARLOTTE — Appalachian State’s hot bats cooled down Wednesday afternoon as the Mountaineers dropped a doubleheader to Charlotte 5-2 and 10-2.

The Mountaineers (0-5) opened up the first game with a leadoff single by junior Brittany Gaston followed by a bunt single from freshman Sarah Rappe. With runners on first and second, freshman sensation Katie Boyd laced a double to the right field gap, scoring Gaston. Rappe was cut down attempting to score, while Boyd advanced to third. Boyd would later score off a passed ball. ASU took a 2-0 lead with only a half inning in the books.

Gaston finished 3-for-7 in the doubleheader.


The Niners (6-2) answered in the bottom of the second, scoring an unearned run. Charlotte loaded the bases later in the inning, but ASU starter Kayla Richardson was able to strand three runners.

Charlotte scored again to tie the game in the bottom of the third off a double off the left-centerfield fence. In the bottom of the fifth, Charlotte exploded for three runs off three hits to take a 5-2 lead.

Men’s tennis
SPARTANBURG, S.C.— USC-Upstate beat Appalachian State 5-2 Tuesday.

At the No.1 spot, Bobby Lake fell in two sets, losing 6-2 and 6-3. Teammate Ryan Brookshaw was also unsuccessful as he lost at the No. 2 position, falling in three sets.

Both Trent Constance and Lee Floyd won their matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots respectively.
