ASU football notebook:

Bonham honors Moore
From staff reports

Bonham, Texas honored one of its most prominent sons on Monday when the city celebrated “Jerry Moore Day” with a ceremony at the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame.

Moore, who has led Appalachian State University to three-straight NCAA Division I national championships, grew up in Bonham, a town of 9,900 located about 75 miles northeast of Dallas and just over 10 miles south of the Texas-Oklahoma border.

Since leaving the northeast Texas hamlet, Moore has compiled a 194-118-2 record in 26 years as a head coach at North Texas, Texas Tech and Appalachian State. In his 19 seasons at ASU, Moore has led the Mountaineers to a 167-70 record, making him the winningest coach in school and Southern Conference history.

Thanks to a 39-6 combined record over the past three seasons, which includes the three-straight national titles and last September’s monumental 34-32 season-opening victory over No. 5 Michigan, Moore is the first Division I mentor to ever earn three-consecutive American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year awards.

Moore graduated from Bonham High School, where he earned 14 varsity letters in four sports, in 1957.

Highlight disc almost ready
Production of Quest For Three, a four-disc commemorative DVD tribute to Appalachian’s run at an unprecedented third-straight national championship, is nearing completion.

The four-disc set includes:

Disc One: The Appalachian ISP Sports Network’s official season recap, including highlights from all 15 games and exclusive interviews with Mountaineer coaches and players; bonus features, headlined by interviews with Moore and director of athletics Charlie Cobb, the final five minutes of the season-opening triumph at Michigan as heard and seen on the Appalachian ISP Sports Network and the Top 10 Plays of the Year.

Disc Two: The Big Ten Network’s entire Appalachian-Michigan game broadcast, announced by Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis.

Disc Three: “Under The Lights: Appalachian State — A Date With Destiny.” A documentary by Fox Sports Net captures the Mountaineers’ entire journey to the win at the Big House, from the beginning of fall camp in early August to the victors’ triumphant return to Boone following the 34-32 upset in Ann Arbor.

Disc Four: ESPN’s entire broadcast of the 2007 NCAA Division I national championship game. Sean McDonough and Chris Spielman called the action of the Mountaineers’ 49-21 rout over Delaware.

Quest For Three will go on sale exclusively to guests at Appalachian’s national championship banquet on March 29. Sales will open to the general public immediately following the banquet at GoASU.com. The entire four-disc set costs just $33.33.

Spring practice
Appalachian officially starts preparations for the 2008 season when spring practice begins on Monday.
Under NCAA regulations, the Mountaineers can conduct 15 spring practices. All 15 sessions will be held between next Monday and March 29.
