Appalachian State’s Hutchinson brothers made sure the Mountaineers got off to a fast start in their 30-9 victory over Liberty in a non-conference wrestling match Wednesday night at Varsity Gym. Read more.

Commentary: Beware of ASU when offense is on the same page
When the Appalachian State offense is working right, they win games the way they did Monday night. The Mountaineers, shooting 51 percent from the floor, mauled a Wofford team that seemed helpless in stopping center Donte Minter and struggled to stop Appalachian State’s outside shooting. Read more.

Relay team reaches finals
CHAPEL HILL — Watauga’s boys’ 200-yard relay team managed to reach the finals in the NCHSAA class 4-A swim championships Saturday. The team of Jonathan Edwards, Konrad Kosmala, Minori Ohashi and William Rayner finished 16th overall in the event. They reached the finals with a time of 1:33.28 and swam a 1:33.90 in the final. A key element in winning the Southern Conference’s North Division is winning home games. In its last two games at the Holmes Center, Appalachian State is batting .500. Read more.
Mountaineers storm The Citadel in OT
A slow first half could not keep Appalachian State center Donte Minter from putting the Mountaineers on his shoulders Saturday. Minter, the Mountaineers’ 6-foot-9 center and leading scorer, collected 22 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and an overtime period in Appalachian State’s 75-71 victory over The Citadel in front of 2,689 at the Holmes Center. Davidson overcomes ASU in final seconds
Davidson trailed Appalachian State for 59:57.2 Saturday at the Holmes Center. Yet the Mountaineers did not lead Davidson for the final 2.8 seconds, and it ended up costing them. Davidson’s Mercedes Robinson took an inbounds pass just inside the foul line and drained a shot that gave the Wildcats a 67-66 victory over the Mountaineers. Read more.

The battle of the two Division I national champions has been set.

Pioneer women take Senior Night victory
Suddenly, Watauga’s girls’ basketball team is the group nobody in the Northwestern 4-A Conference wants to play. The Pioneers, who struggled through the first part of their NWC season with just one win, made it two straight in the second half of league play with a 63-52 victory over East Burke at Lentz-Eggers Gym Friday night, which was also Senior Night. Cavaliers raid Watauga at home, 97-83
The team that ran Watauga’s offense the best Friday night turned out to be East Burke.

There was no time that was more obvious that Appalachian State proved it was struggling offensively than the final 2:45 of its 68-63 loss to College of Charleston at the Holmes Center in front of 2,692 Thursday
