TAYLORSVILLE — Watauga’s girls’ jayvee team won 12 of its final 13 games and won the Northwestern 4-A Conference championship.
The Pioneers finished 16-7 overall, 10-2 in the NWC. They had winning streaks of five and seven games this year and beat girls’ basketball powers McDowell and Freedom two times each. Watauga’s lone conference losses were to South Caldwell and East Burke.
The Pioneers were made up of eight sophomores and seven freshmen. They were able to win the league title despite several underclassmen being brought up to the varsity level.
Watauga was able to use a balanced offense to win its championship. Kayla Kincaid led the Pioneers in scoring with 9.5 points per game. Justice Woods averaged 7.1 points per game, while Shelby Gilliam scored 6.3. Mariah Corbin averaged 5.7 points and Courtney Dunnigan chipped in 4.0 per game.
The Pioneers averaged 42.7 points per game during the season and 43.6 during the conference slate. They gave up 35.2 points per game overall and 36.0 during the season.
