Appalachian State’s Hutchinson brothers made sure the Mountaineers got off to a fast start in their 30-9 victory over Liberty in a non-conference wrestling match Wednesday night at Varsity Gym.
Starting at 157 pounds, Eddie Hutchinson pinned Julian Colon just 52 seconds into the match. Hutchinson took a 2-0 lead with a takedown before putting Colon on his back.
Not to be outdone, Hutchinson’s twin brother, Tommy, pinned Chad Porter in the second period with a cradle. Tommy Hutchinson actually trailed 2-0, but was able to pin Porter to give the Mountaineers a 12-0 lead.
“The kid that Tommy pinned is a tough kid,” Mountaineers coach Paul Mance said. “He’s beaten three or four kids who have beaten Tommy, so that was a big win for Tommy.”
Appalachian State went on to win four out of its next five matches against the Flames, who had beaten The Citadel and UNC Greensboro in matches earlier this year.
“They’re good,” Mance said. “They beat Greensboro and they’ve wrestled very well. They’ve beaten some good schools this year. They have four kids who were national qualifyers last year.”
Liberty’s Aaron Kelly beat Neal Martin 4-3 at 174 pounds, but Appalachain State’s Austin Trotman picked up three team points by beating Chris Daggett at 184 pounds. Dylan Temple won 9-0 at 197 pounds for the Mountaineers, giving them a 19-3 lead. At 125 pounds, Frank Celorrio beat Sean Katz 6-0, giving the Mountaineers their second shutout in three matches. Terreyl Williams added a 15-6 win over Christian Smith at 133 pounds, and Scott Ervin closed out the match with an 18-4 win over freshman Scott Clymer.
“The kid that Terreyl wrestled was a national qualifyer,” Mance said. “Terreyl ended up beating him by (nine) points, so it was a huge win.”
Mance gave credit to his team’s conditioning as a reason why they were able to beat the Flames.
“Our kids were in a little bit better shape than their team was tonight,” Mance said. “Our kids were ready to wrestle and we knew it was going to be a tight match.”
