ASU to host Wofford

A key element in winning the Southern Conference’s North Division is winning home games. In its last two games at the Holmes Center, Appalachian State is batting .500.

Appalachian State gets one more chance on this three-game homestand to defend its turf when the Mount-aineers host Wofford Monday night at the Holmes Center. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

The Mountaineers (15-8, 10-4 SoCon) needed an overtime period to beat The Citadel 75-71 Saturday, but College of Charleston walked away with a 69-63 win over Appalachian State last Thursday.

“It’s really important to us to win at home,” Mountaineers coach Houston Fancher said after beating The Citadel. “The thing that we’re really focused on, is that we had to put the Charleston game behind us. We hadn’t talked about the tournament or anything else except The Citadel.”

The Citadel gave the Mountaineers a look at what could happen Monday night against Wofford. The Terriers (14-10, 7-7), much like The Citadel, depend on 3-point baskets to generate offense.

“They lead the league in 3-point shooting,” Fancher said of The Citadel. “You’ve got to get out and guard them. They made some deep shots. You play the odds, but they’re hitting the same percentage from 3-point range that they are shooting twos.”

However, unlike The Citadel, which has 14 freshman on its roster, Wofford’s perimeter shooters are SoCon veterans. Shane Nichols, Drew Gibson and Junior Salters are all dangerous 3-point shooters that the Mountaineers will have to account for.
